i pulled the head off my 4x4 luv and i noticed in the haynes it was saying the engine ways 310 lbs . now i figure it may be possible to pull the bottom half of my engine without having to rent a picker. does anyone have any ideas on ways to do this? i don't want to lift it out by hand cause i'm sure that can't be good on the back. anyone know what a block and tackle is?

you could use a block and tackle, just find a big tree limb to tie it to. what would work better would be a chain hoist. if you don't have one you can buy the small ones pretty cheap. the problem with the block and tackle is someone will have to constantly pull on the rope to keep the engine up. you might have to twist it and move stuff around to get it out. so it might be kinda hard with the block and tackle.

i forgot to say what a block and tackle is. it is a set of pulleys that makes the load alot easier to lift, you still have to lift by hand and it won't hold it, as soon as you let go the motor will fall. you just hang it and pull the rope. a chain hoist would be alot better since it will hold.

I put a railroad tie across some of the ceiling joists in my shop, and used a come-along (fence stretcher) to pull alot of engines. You can get one at autozone for 30 bucks or so.

i dont know what kinda block n tackle you guys have but with mine there is a big pully attached to something above, in my case a think plank of wood running between the rafters in my garage, theres a loop of chain running though one part of the pully and by pulling on this it either lifts up a hook on another chain running though the pully, and it doesnt matter if you let it go the motor will still stay put even right up the top!

I have used a comealong with tie-downs on my rafters. it picked up a pontiac 455 before....I know it is strong enough!!!

I built one out of 4'X6' at 8 foot long, then put a comealong on it with the block and tackle. I have to build anudder one since I don't have any trees in the yard that are alive.

noyz, what you have is a chain hoist, a block and tackle consists of a rope and pulleys that doubles or triple lines the load, like you would do with a winch. it just makes the load you are lifting easier to pull. i pulled the motor out of an MG using a chain hoist and a put a 4x4 fence post across the rafters in my garage. i would only recommend doing this if you have good rafters in your garage.

When the garage is built in the back yard, the center frame is gonna be re-enforced so I can lift cars and stuff 8-)

A friend of mine tried to get the engine out of his Full size and it snapped the frame like sticks. So now he has to put a new truss in. Ewwww.

I know that that is one of the points that I am going to make is that I want it to be structurally sound so I can jerk motors out of their sockets in the garage. But for now, I have to make a hangmans platform and pull it out like that with a winch. I hate it, but ya know. Working in the grass is not that bad.
