 Post subject: Alternator smoking?

Good afternoon fellow LUVers..
I got my 72-73 out the garage, checked connections and the battery charge..
When I hooked up the battery, The alternator is getting hot and smoking.
Any suggestions? Pull the alternator and have it checked or replace it? HELP!
