 Post subject: interchange for engine

i have a 1976 LUV with a 1.8 motor, a guy has a 1.8 also but it is out of a 1980, is the 1980 motor a direct replacement?

Not so sure, The starter is on the left side, not the passenger side. I think the clutch mechanism is different too. My 77 has a hydraulic clutch with the throw out arm on the passenger side. The starter is on the passenger side too. It seems the '78 on had a cable clutch, though I am not sure. Better check it out before your purchase. I bought a used '77 transmission from a place in Oregon but they sent a '78 or newer one. Starter on wrong side. Wouldn't fit. They would not refund it----said I waited too long. Anyway, I have a good '78 on' tranny for sale.
