Post subject: i need to fix my engine
PostPosted: Wed Dec 31, 2003 8:56 pm
i just signed up n this site. i scored a free 1980 four wheel drive chevy luv, it is a solid pickup, except the engine is pulled out, and supposedly it has a knock in the top end. i talked to a local engine buider who has been around for a lond time, and he said it may be the slack adjuster on the timing chain. ithink me and my dad, (i am monly 17) are going to re-ring, re-bearing, and put all newgaskets in the engine. i am goin t have the cam ground, so it should run alright. if anybody has any ideas on what to do, they would be greatly appreciated, also any books, ar other documents with istructins on how to rebuild it would be greatly appreciated. thanks. e-mail:kyles73ford@hotmail.com

any pointers you could give me would be great. since i have not got started on it yeet, just some known problems that people tend to have would be great. i am only seventeen, but i work at a shop that rebuilds engines here in sweet home, and i often disassemble engines, so i am capable of that. i have two of them, so i am going to disassemble the bottom end, (i dont want to touch the overhead cam) and bring the parst in and have them all measured, and fid out wich are best, and then i am going to have a cam ground. i know it is generally not accepted, but i am going to try to reuse the stock pistons.

Do not try to re-use the stock pistons if at all possible. I have tried on other vehicles, and have had no luck. One other suggestion is to buy a haynes or chiltons manual. An old one if possible. They seem to be better and more detailed.

well all i can say is get a haynes and start wrenching. If you work whith engines much you will find that the 1.8L isuzu is a fairly simple and straight forward motor. It was the forst motor i rebuilt and i didnt have any problems. The hardest part was setting up the timing chain right :?

Try the same place. They usually have full rebuild kits.
