 Post subject: Week fire HELP!
PostPosted: Wed Dec 31, 2003 8:36 am
Hi evryone!

I have been reading your board for a little while.
My problem is this. I have a 1980 luv that was a little abused by the brother inlaw and I now need the truck running. I put an 82 motor in and have not been able to get it to fire. I have put a new coil, rotor, dist. cap, wires and I now have a week spark to the plugs. I have a strong spark to the distibutor but week coming out. I also have put new points (checked gap twice) and condencer.
Also, the wiring has been checked. I believe I may have somthing crossed. I also have questions on the black/red wire that goes from the starter solanoid to the coil ( I believe goes to the neg. post). Is this correct? I have ran a wire directly to the distributor from the neg. post on the coil and left the black/red wire off to get some spark.

If anyone has an idea I woud realy apreciate it. I have also put a 2nd distributor on that I know is good.

Thanks from frustrated T4!

This may sound stupid but check your fuses.

are you sure you have it timed correctly?
how do you know it has a weak spark?
some distributors require a certain voltage (not necessarily 12V) going to them....maybe you have too much or not enough.
just some things to ponder on.
hope they help.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's timed correctly( finding TDC). I checked the fuses in the fuse box located on the drivers side under the hood. Is there an inline fuse I may be missing some where?
When I pull the plug whire( #1) to se if i'm getting spark to the plug it sparks but barely. Also, when i hook my timing lite up it will not work. When hooked to the coil wire the timing lite works. The spark at the coil wire is a strong, nice blue arc which I also felt. My wiring diagram si'nt helping much at this time. Still puzzled about the black/red wire from the starter to the coil.
I also tried rotating the distributor while cranking it over with no success.
Thanks for the info and anymore ideas are greatly appreciated. I also checked voltage to dis. but can't remember reading. I believe it was at spec according to the book.

try cleaning the points. Just spray some electric cleaner on em and run a lint free cloth between em. I had a problem much like this on my 80, i eventually ditched the points distributor for an electronic one from an 82 luv. Good luck
