I have the GEN light coming on mostly on the first trip of the day. The trip home from work it barely comes on, if at all. The truck runs like normal except when the GEN light comes on the headlights get brighter in connection with GEN light.
Alternator? Voltage regulator? Any help would be appreciated.

GEN light coming on more frequent now.
I see it comes on the most at higher RPM's, mostly before shifting and then when cruising in 4th gear. This morning's ride to work it was on solid for a few minutes for the first time since this has been happening.
I suppose I will replace alternator on Sunday, I hear these trucks burn through them and my current one is four years old.

I had a glowing alt light last year and it was the alternator.

Before replacing the alternator, I'd try replacing the brushes. They're about $10, if they're like the ones on my diesel. It's about an hour's work including soldering the terminals onto the leads (assuming they're accessible without removing the alternator). The ones for my diesel were not Isuzu-specific, they were generic. So they shouldn't be hard to find.

I would change the regulator at the same time as the alternator. They kind of go together like points and condenser.

Regulator and alternator are brand new. This is even the second new regulator trying to figure it out.

Most new regulators now are crappily built. If it works, the voltage could be too low or high. They are adjustable. I am having trouble typing, but a search on this sight for regulator adjusting should help you out...

not trying to be a dik but are you keeping the regulator to keep an entirely stock truck stock, instead of just canning all that stuff and installing (with some bracket building) a modern alt with internal regulation?

Not trying to keep anything stock, just want it to be a reliable truck to get to work.
I am not very mechanically inclined, so I wouldn't know where to start doing something like that.

Maybe try following the wire or look at the schematic, and see where it goes. Could have a loose connection somewhere for the light. IDK, just throwing ideas out there. If it is charging, it should be reliable to drive, just with a flickering light. But that's annoying I know.

ok, thanks 007. parts for these trucks are getting way harder to come by,thats for sure. At some point things are going to have to be adapted to fit, to keep on the road. I dont have that problem because my 79 isnt road worthy, just a retirement project to mess with when i feel the need to cut or modify something. I put a Chevy 1 wire 110amp alternator on mine, but I dont have any dash lights (or dash) so it was pretty simple. a smaller Japanese alt would have been easier to bracket in,but I had the big case Chevy laying around..good luck with the flicker. Im sure these guys will get you sorted soon.

Is there any alternators that have the regulator installed out there that fit the wires that are on the stock truck?
I am cool with trying to fabricate a mount for the alternator, just don't know which alternator I should get that will work for the truck.
