I have a G200 block and Trooper 5spd transmission and it's a 4x4. I will be installing a turbo kit when this clutch goes in.

Should I buy this:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/zzz- ... /model/luv

It has an 8.5" diameter. I thought standard 4x4 clutches were 8". Not sure if it will fit. If it does, I would want to machine the fly wheel correct?

If you have your stock 1979 4x4 flywheel on the G200 engine then the 8.5" clutch will not fit, if you have the G200 flywheel it will- the 8" & 8.5" have different pressure plate bolt patterns.
1979 2x4 & 4x4 LUVs use a 8" clutch, 1980-on G180 2x4s use the same 8" clutch, 1980-on G180 4x4s & all G200s & diesels use a 8.5" clutch (the same clutch as used on the 2.3 4ZD1 BTW). The 8.5" 1.8/1.9 flywheel is 6-bolt like the 8" one, so the larger clutch & matching flywheel will retrofit to any G180 engine. The 2.3 flywheel is 8-bolt, so though the 8.5" clutches are the same the flywheels are different. The G200 flywheels are available but most suppliers that even list them mistakenly list the 2.3 8-bolt one that will not fit, probably they are matching the flywheel to the clutch, not to the engine. A resurfaced salvaged one from a G200 engine would be one source, I know of one reliable source for new ones, PM me if interested.
Use your choice of any clutch for a G200, 4ZD1/C1 or C223/T, the one with the most clamping power is supposed to be the factory unit for the turbo diesel, which happened to be an Exedy. The Centerforce dual friction is discontinued.

Thank you, I will just order it after I pull my motor. I didn't build it so I don't know which flywheel is in there.

Ok thanks, here is my flywheel.

I believe any will work based on the info above, just thought I'd double check.

I'd like to buy this:

Sorry I read the post above wrong, it looks like this is the clutch for my 6 bolt flywheel. My current clutch is definitely the 7-7/8s" clutch.

FYI you can get either of the clutches in the link for quite a bit cheaper. Both rockauto.com & ebay have either for around $100 shipped, so shop around. Ebay also has used 6-bolt flywheels for the 8.5 clutch should you want to upgrade, just be sure what you buy fits a G200Z 1.9 engine.

I don't think he told us WHICH 5-speed 4x4 transmission he has. There were two different transmissions, depending on the year of the Trooper. The '86-'87 Troopers used the MSG-5. When the 2.6L engine was introduced in '88, the MUA-5 transmission was mated to it. Does that matter in this discussion?

Not really, for a 1.8 or 1.9 GxxxZ series engine you have to match the clutch to the flywheel being used, much the same way as if using a 2.3 or 2.6 4Zx1 series flywheel: different flywheels have different clutch attachment bolt patterns while the flywheels & trannies are interchangeable among each engine series.
Plus in a previous post re the tranny swap I seem to remember it was a MSG Trooper tranny.

I do have the 6 bolt flywheel. Does that mean the 8.5" clutch will fit? I would like the biggest strongest one I can get.
Thanks for the help

My block is in the shop now. I'm getting custom JE pistons made and I've got forged rods, Clive cam, and a bunch of good shit going into this. Bigger 4ZD1 valves with all the head work for the turbo.

All flywheels for 1.8 or 1.9 engines have 6 crank bolts. If the clutch you took out is a 8" then the 8.5" clutch won't fit your flywheel, to upgrade you'll need to purchase a 6-bolt flywheel for the 8.5" clutch. Like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/81-82-83-84-85 ... SwkNpahhOH it says it's from a 1986 pickup w/1.9 engine.

Ok thanks so much! I bought this stuff from Rockauto:

AMS AUTOMOTIVE 167030 Flywheel $ 45.89 $ 0.00 1 $ 45.89
EXEDY 04071 Clutch Kit $ 70.79 $ 0.00 1 $ 70.79

Looks to be correct!

The 8.5" clutch ordered will fit the flywheel you ordered, but that flywheel is for a 4ZD1 2.3 engine, it has 8 crank bolts & will not fit your G200Z engine, which has 6 crank bolts. This is one of those instances that I mentioned previously where parts suppliers don't have the correct part number for this engine, they match the flywheel to the clutch. Every supplier does the same thing, even those $300-plus aluminum Fidanzas. The problem is that 8.5" clutch was used for three different Isuzu engine series but each series used a distinctly different flywheel. rockauto does not sell the flywheel you need, they only list ones with 8 crank bolts that fit the 4ZD1 engine & don't listen when you try to tell them it won't fit a G-series engine- I've tried. And it's not just rockauto, it's every parts supplier I've looked at.
See if you can cancel or modify the order so you don't have to pay return shipping. If you want the 8.5" clutch upgrade you'll need the correct flywheel, the ebay link I posted previously is for what should be a correct used one, I got a new one from jlemond@bellsouth.net, seems like it was around $100 & came in a flat rate USPS box.
