Have a friend with an 81 and needs front rotors. When he goes to any of the places, they give him the one off the 79+ and it don't work. Right part number, wrong part. Anyone know where to get the wrong part number and the right part?

I do a lot of my research using http://www.rockauto.com to check out part numbers. I've only ever ordered from them once, but their database is really nice for looking up multiple years and makes at the same time to compare.

If you still have real problems, look for parts for an 82 or 83 Isuzu P'up instead. They should match up to the 81 LUV and take care of the wrong part/right number issues. LUVs are largely identical from 76 up to 80, but the 81 matches up better to 82-84 P'ups for most everything, and some things out to 86-87 if not farther.

When ordered for the 4x4, they are too big, and when ordered for the regular 2x they are too big as well. The rotors are too thick to put on the truck in order to get the calipers on. It is like fitting a Toyota Rotor on a Luv. Machining them down used to be an option, but there is not that much to machine down. They are too big.

I don't remember my wife's 83 P'up being that different in thickness from any of my LUVs (4x or 2x). Of course that thing had extremely worn rotors with 1/8 to 3/16 inch grooves dug into them, so maybe they were just "machined" down already. I do remember it was a pain getting the caliper compressed enough to fit over the rotor and both pads though.

Rockauto shows a difference in diameter between a 79 and an 81 of almost an inch on the ACDelco part, but they don't give a thickness that I can see. If you are getting the "old" part for 79 or 80 LUVs, it should be smaller diameter, assuming rockauto is correct in their info, which isn't a given. I've yet to find them to be wrong so far though.

I will try them and see what happens. They seem to have their ducks ina row - so perhaps they have the right parts.

Your right, the difference is that inch. He ordered what he was supposed to, and the part that he got was what he ordered but that extra inch. He claims that they can't find rotors that match, so I gave him RockAuto.com to get them.

Thanks for the info.

That also gives me an idea of a possible brake upgrade for the older trucks. A larger rotor would mean less fade. Just have to figure out how to swap those newer calipers over. I think some of the mid 80s Pup and Trooper rotors are vented too which would be a further bonus. As long as it can bolt onto the hubs and the calipers can be made to line up it should be possible.

I think I am gonna check on the early S-10 brake systems and see how close they resemble the LUVs. Cause if that was the case, possibly upgrading the hubs to a S-10 would work?

Or perhaps upgrading the rotors and whatnot to a 86+ Pup will do the trick?
