I've had mine to 85 twice, handles pretty good.

BTW, you need to make you avatar smaller, seiriously, if ben sees that he'll probably delete it.

or your motor just doesn't have the power anymore.

I had the same problem back when i had the stock motor. It turned out that the throttle cable at the carb came loose so the throttle plates weren't opening up fully. Once that was fixed, it could keep pace with Hwy traffic. Look for a simple solution before you commit to a major repair that isn't needed.

My 79 4x4, lifted with bigger tires, and a tired motor would roll down the freeway at 85 except on the serious hills. It sounds less like a gears thing and more like a motor thing. Check Blue Meanie's suggestion, make sure the throttle cable is hooked up and adjusted right. The cable should just go slack when the throttle closes. Also check for vac leaks, the vac operated secondary barrel of the carb might not be opening. You can manually work the secondary to make sure it isn't stuck too. With the motor off, turn the throttle some to unlock the secondary, and then you can push the vac actuator and move the secondary a bit. I had one that had been sitting for a long time and the shaft had gotten stuck. The vac actuator could not budge it until I worked it back and forth some by hand. I'd also make sure the choke is coming off correctly too. If it sticks on that will act like a speed limiter.

A quick tune up would help too. Could be spark, or fuel related. Check the timing and make sure its not way off. Scrape the contacts on the underside of the distributor cap clean, replace the points (or clean them if you are able) and a new set of spark plugs could help.

With 500,000 miles, and slightly oversize tires, I can get about 70 on flat road, with a pretty long run at it, with my 80 4x4.

Now my 77 2WD, stock tire size with a well used but far from tired motor will run well into the 90s, uphill or down. I was able to keep up with everything I came across on the freeway this weekend. It sure would be (will be, since my Impulse is going to donate) happier with a 5spd, but it does it.

Mine will go 70 with peddle left over, but the bad wrist pin is knocking so much I don't go over 60.

MY 81 4x4 will rap out at 65ish in 2WH. No tac so I cannot get a RPM but it sounds like the pistons are seeking daylight.

In 4WH top speed is 45mph
In 4WL top speed is 15mph

Now I have varified that my luv has 4.56 gears in it I contacted the old farmer I bought the truck from and he confirmed the swap. He also had something done with the gear ratios in the tranny but he could not remember what and why. He's about 87 now and not all there sadly.
