The last few times I drove my 78 LUV I have seen an issue.
Going up hills I start to lose power in 4th gear and the engine will start to rev up with no speed increase.
I am leaning toward new clutch time, but I wanted to hear from the crew first.
In my Haynes manual it says the issue could be:
Clutch Slip "incorrect release bearing to diaphragm spring finger clearance."

Adjust the clutch, see if it helps. There is a test for a worn disc if the adjustment doesn't work.

Your symptoms are textbook. I can't see adjustment helping it, because if they get out of adjustment, it's usually the opposite problem (won't disengage).

Re the Haynes manual: the pages should be suitable for composting, but not sure about the cover. ;)

Okay, so new clutch time?

I am a little overwhelmed by the task, but would like to tackle it. I have two weeks off in March and I suppose that is when I will get the clutch replaced (carpooling with the wife until then, boy is she thrilled).

Whats the best plan to buying a new clutch?

Is there a walkthrough on Luvtruck? Any thing I need to know?

If the Haynes manual sucks, what is the best one to have for guidance in maintenance and repairs?

Thanks as always for the help, have a good day!

Just replaced my clutch this fall, wasnt that bad except i didnt read the manual correct and tried adjusting the cable the opposite way i was supposed to.

Get a shop manual. Go slow and keep the bolts and parts organized as you go.

Biggest pain in the ass is if working by yourself getting the tranny out and back up in.. start benchpressing now.... but really it wasnt that bad..

Bought a Luk Clutch kit off rock auto.com

I agree, assuming he's talking about the genuine Chevy manual.

And while you have the transmission out, it would be a shame not to do the rear main seal and the pilot bearing. And if you've ever even thought about a 5-speed upgrade, now would be the time. ;)

Does yours have a clutch cable, or a hydraulic setup?

Your truck is a series 8, a series 8, 9 or 10 manual will serve your purposes, the 2wd trannies are all the same. The differences in the trucks are the sheet metal and the 4wd powertrain from '79-on.
A series 7 manual would also apply as long as '77s have the cable clutch, I'm not sure which year they switched from hydraulic to cable.

Since this is your first LUV clutch replacement do the minimum required, save the extras for a later time. I agree with replacing the pilot bearing but not the main seal unless it's actually leaking. The 5-spd would require at least some driveshaft mods that sticking with the 4spd won't.

You won't know the condition of your flywheel until you get the clutch plate unbolted, but if it's just slick & not scored I would be tempted to try roughing the surface with sandpaper rather than removing for resurfacing, again keeping it as simple as possible. If it definitely needs resurfaced then you might consider a new series 10 4wd flywheel instead along with the matching bigger clutch; the additional cost isn't that great & the labor's the same, just using different parts.

Do the free play adj first. If not that then clutch replace time. Push by hand on the clutch pedal, should be about 3/4 inch movement before resistance is felt.

That's the right part number & LUK is a good brand but you can get the same thing a lot cheaper: rockauto.com will be about $75 shipped with the 5% discount code (B98FFC1C618B8C).
OEM was Exedy, they're about $95 shipped.
