Hey there,
I have a 79 4x4 with the 1.8 in it. I keep having to put fuel pump after fuel pump to keep it running. I've replaced the relay with an aftermarket one and it had no change(it has ran since I changed it) and I have ran new wires to the fuel pump, and even changed the ground to one I know works and still I'm having trouble keeping the fuel moving. I have a filter before the fuel pump and one before the carb and it has fuel in the filter at the pump but not the carb. I've replaced all, and I mean all fuel lines and still no fix. I'm out of options. As far as I know, I'm getting proper voltage to all components. Any help here?

This happened to me again in Palmdale today (mercifully close to a CarQuest)

Same issue here. Seems to happen disproportionately in hot weather. Takes me ages to figure out it's the fucking pump each time. Car starts to struggle and cough after running like a champ for ages. Dies and throws the Charge light. I diagnose electrical contacts and carb connections until I finally go "It can't be the fuel pump again, can it???".

Then it will just start fine, just like it does every day! Like nothing was amiss... And I'll go on my merry way thinking I must have wiggled a contact in the right way, only for the same issue to happen again next time I'm in hot weather. Today it didn't stop happening, and finally I detached a fuel line and sure enough - no gas.

What gives??? Am I chasing a bad ground that shows itself when all the frame metal the black wire is attached to is hot?

Maybe a charging issue? No charging means fuel pump doesn't run.

Thinking back, I think my fuse box issue showed up this way. The fuse box fix was the end of that charging light coming on, which
was the end of the fuel pump not pumping.

I have to admit, this answer best satisfies Hanlons Razor - maybe time to finally solder those contacts....

Every time, this is my first suspicion. Brand new alternator, brand new battery, cables look good, meter says it's ok. Perhaps most importantly, my lights and electrical work fine while the issue is occurring....so charging circuit must be ok...for me at least.

So what has to be done to the fuse block?

Usually a real good cleaning on all the contacts with lemon juice or other cleaner

I had the same problem in my truck as well. Had no fuel in the lines, and the fuel pump had no noise. Checked the power to the pump and it had no power. Charge light was on. Replaced the regulator fuss and never had another problem since! Hope this helps

It would be helpful to know if the pump is getting power or not.

If it is, then your pumps are failing.

If it isn't, then there's an electrical problem.

I've often thought that running a wire from the fuel pump + at the pump to a light on the dash would be a good idea so you can instantly see if the pump loses power. I've had a corroded fuse block, bad ground, and bad power feed over the years on my Luv's. Should be one of those. Never had a bad pump.

Okay guys, i took the fuse block out of the truck today. I had one clip that was broken and all the other clips were corroded really, i mean really bad. Im gonna replace all the ends of the wires going to the fuse block while this thing is soaking in lemon juice and put it back on in a day or so.

Side note: I know this isn't right, all 6 fuses in the fuse block were 10 amp fuses. does anyone know what should be in each, and if possible, what each fuse controls?

Okay. Took the fuse block and cleaned it, found a diagram for proper fuse size, replaced the female connectors and still nothing. I'm really close to setting this thing on fire and rolling it out on the highway in front of my house :smt013 :smt010 :smt011

And done like what was previously said and hooked up an indicator light, well when the motor is spinning, it lights up. I guess it back to the parts store for another pump. Any recommendations on pumps? The one I posted in the link above, I've been through four of them now so I'm not going back with that one

Did we ever find out what the culprit was here?

I would say to eliminate systems run a new hot wire to pump from ignition and new ground with fuse and relay of coarse. Check the new pump for maximum amps. Size fuse accordingly. Then you know you have good system to pump. I would highly suspect you have a faulty regulator that is over charging your system. I had problem with an old Toyota that would do it. Maybe cheap pump an need to go with after market in line pump.
