The other night I was driving home, and I turned the corner at a stop light. Next thing I know, I step on the gas and I heard a tapping noise something awful what sounded like it was coming out of the top of the engine. I pulled over and didn't see anything wrong, but I noticed that it was running poorly. Every time it is under load, the tapping noise persists. I pulled the valve cover off the next day thinking that it had a broken valve spring. All the springs were fine. I pulled off wires to see which cylinder was having trouble, and it turned out to be cylinders 3 and 4 were not firing. It looks like they have no compression. I did the liquid head gasket test, and it didn't prove to have exhaust gas in the water, but my dad still persists that it is the head gasket, which was replaced 8 months ago. I think that it is still something to do with the valves. I think that the valves may be too tight, or I may have a burnt valve. Any help would be appreciated

#1 head gasket. #2 broken camshaft between cylinders 2 and 3. Crank the engine and see if everything is turning.
Also do a compression check if you haven't already.

Everything is turning correctly as far as the camshaft and valves go, I was just thinking that the valves weren't closing all the way causing combustion to leak out of The valves.

If the valves were leaking from being too tight it would have been a gradual thing rather than all the sudden. Compression check will tell the story if valve or head gasket related. Another thing though rare, is a carbon track inside the distributor cap causing the spark to short to ground or to fire the wrong cylinder. Rare but does happen.
My thoughts.

Thanks for all the help. I'm baffled that it is a possible head gasket because I had replaced it 8 months ago on the day that it "failed". I'm also thinking it could be a burnt valve as well. Anyway, the head has to come off. I'll post what I find out

LUVs are known for blown head gaskets. It could have happened again.

I tore down the motor today and it turns out that the gasket burned between 3 and 4 pretty badly. Put a new head Gasket on and it runs like a champ!

Holy crap how many inches through the floor were you holding your gas pedal when that happened? I have seen a carb gasket blow out that bad on a turbo motor never a head gasket.
At leaat it is a fairly cheap fix compared to a broken cam or shot valves

I honestly don't ever run the truck over 3500 normally, 4k being the absolute max! I'm still unsure on how it blew so bad :esad

You always need to go back after a few hundred miles and check the head bolt & rocker arm torque & re-adjust the valves any time the head gasket is replaced. Not doing so won't necessarily shorten the head gasket life, but why take the chance?

Forsure. I think I'll go back in 2 months to re-torque and adjust valves.

I know! I checked the cylinder walls and they were immaculate. The engine looks to have been rebuilt in the past or it has low miles because there are still hone marks in them.
