Hi all:

I am having issue with the truck (78 2WD stock 74,000 miles on it). when I accelerate in neutral it will cough for a second or two and then rev up. As I am driving it will often hiccup a second or two right after I shift. It is most noticeable in 4th gear. I shift and a second or two later it will kinda lag a second. Once I am in the gear it responds well after that first moment.

I live in a town where you have to drive up a big hillside to get out. I have been able (with a running start) to get up the hill at 50 - 55 mph. The last time I drove it up the hill it started to really lose power. I puttered up the hill at around 37 - 40 mph. Once I was clear of the hill and it evened out the truck accelerated to 55 - 60 mph where I cruise at.

I have read a lot of the posts and I would love some feedback here.

I would start by checking to see if any vacuum lines are loose or have leaks. Then the fuel filter.

As was said, check for vacuum leaks, however these usually show more as a rough idle. Next check the float level in the carb. Should be at the halfway mark across the glass window sight glass. Then, replace the accelerator pump diaphram plunger in the carb. These will usually come in a carb rebuilt kit with many other parts.
These are the most likely fixes.
