I've searched and searched to no avail. Is there some sort of butterfly type valve in the stock manifold on a 78 luv with g180 motor. I have the world's most annoying rattle coming from what I suspect is a valve in the manifold. UT can't seem to find any info.

Thanks guys!

Darn no replies, I'm either a total idiot or have stumped the forum. Time will tell. Lol

There is no valve of any kind in the exhaust manifold. If you still have the air pump system on the truck the anti-backflow valve could rattle with exhaust pulses i guess. However this is not in the manifold but mounted onto the plumbing involved with the AIR system.

Thanks for the response. Is this in anyway plumbed into the manifold. I see the exhaust gas recirculation tube. There is a distinct metal rattle narrowed down to the manifold area. I pulled the heat shield to eliminate that as cause. I was hoping this was common. Looks like I'll have to try and pull the manifold and get to the bottom of this. Was trying to avoid that until i could confirm it was necessary for it surely has never been removed for the life of the truck.

Thanks Again.

The air pump system is about a 1 inch diameter tube setting above the manifold with 4 half inch tubes running down into the manifold, one at each cylinders exhaust. If removed there will probably be a small pipe plug in each spot.
One possibily is one of the pipes could have broken off and the piece maybe fell inside the manifold and is rattling around in there.
You would have to pull the manifold of course to look inside. Thats my best guess.

Turns out I am simply an idiot. The connection between the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe was just loose enough to allow the two pipes to rattle like crazy along with quite an exahust leak. Can't believe I didn't check that first but it happens.

Thanks guys!
