recently had a mishap with my cam gear coming off. First question is can i put a cross flow head on my non cross flow 1.8? its a 75 with the exhaust and intake on the same side. if not where can i get a new head and possibly pistons. i know the questions are gona come flying at me but the answer is i dont know because i havent taken a look beside removing the inspection cover and seeing the cam gear loose. i think one of the dowels sheared but not sure if the valves bent. gona pull the head and check soon. just tryna prepare for the worst case scenario.

thanks from hawaii

here is a little info from when I rebuilt a 76 motor about 1 year ago. Some of the gaskets are getting harder to find.
I do have at my disposal a 1973 motor (tore down but complete)and trans with 28000 miles on it I will not sell just parts its all or nothing.
The reason I did not finish rebuilding the 73 motor was that I can find most of the gaskets but not all of them.

Interesting question. I don't know enough about the early engines to know if the head can be swapped. I'd also like to know the answer and hope someone more knowledgable will chime in.

Just by looking at the difference of the timing chain covers I would say they are not interchangeable.

the one gasket that I could not find was one that went between the block and for lack of terms intermediate pan.
it is flat with a hoop on each end. I do believe that if you find the right place it can be made.
I found listings for full gasket sets but no one had them.

I assumed that the ones with intake and exhaust on the same side were that way because there were pushrods on the other side. And the ones with cross flow heads would be OHC engines (no pushrods). Is that correct?

The American early and late G180 are both OHC.

yup mine is OHC. I actually have never even looked at the block configuration/ differences between the years...duh sometimes the simplest answers are the hardest to find. Anyway, I got lucky. The timing gear bolt and retaining washer backed off enough to allow the cam to stop and the crank to spin. Im assuming that the cam stopped in a "sweet spot" where none of the valves were open enough to hit the pistons. I never heard a tap, bang bliff or even kerpow during my unsucsessful starts or while it was running. Engine gods were on my side.

The early models--non crossflow heads-- the pistons will not hit the valves, plenty of clearence. The later crossflow heads however will contact the valves with a timing chain failure.
The heads will not interchange because intake, carburator, etc are on the other side of the block. Also the later head timing chain is driven with a single chain from the crank shaft, the early ones like you have, the camshaft is driven by two different chains--one to the jack shaft that drives the oil pump and distributer, other from there to the camshaft.
Make sure you tighten the cam sprocket bolt to the proper torque after you reset for the proper timing. This depends on it's torque by friction to drive the cam, not by the dowel.
