Does anyone have any suggestions for flywheel removal? I'm haveing trouble removing the bolts because the wheel spins freely. I'm doing this from under the truck.

I bent and ground a strong steel L-bracket (from the hardware store) and bolted it into one of the holes in the block where the bell housing would have been, and engaged the bracket into the ring gear.

I later bought a cheap electric impact wrench from Harbor Freight, and that was much easier.

I'm not exactly sure how you put that bracket on, could you explain that against the picture of my flywheel?

Do you mean that you used the l portion of your bracket to engage with the flywheel? Wouldn't that risk breaking the teeth?

No, it likely won't put any more pressure on the tooth than the starter, just make sure it fits tight or it may make a rough place on a tooth.
The Harbor Freight electric impact is about $40 & will probably remove the bolts without anything holding the flywheel, but you must have something to lock the flywheel to torque the bolts to the right tightness when replacing the flywheel.
EMPI makes a flywheel lock for VWs that will probably work if you don't want to fab something.

I found the photo of it in use. I flipped it the other way to hold the flywheel when installing it.
