Is this the way it's supposed to be? There is a gap between the sheet metal and the support frame work, and along the way there seems to be several rubber disc's pushed in there to provide support.

That is normal, there used to be some material that filled the gap a various points along the framework but they rot away. I replaced some on a louvered hood I used to have with some automotive carpet I cut into small squares and slipped into the gaps.

You can see some of the rotted out material in your pic, looks like blobs now.

It looks like the gap is different on one side compared to the other, I think it is bent a little making the gap wider, but I can see the glop you're talking about. Looks like the stuff they use to seal roof leaks!

I would say yes its common to have gaps

I think originally there was a gap on the hoods but i get the feeling over the years the sun beating down on them

the material that is in there has softened up and pulled apart some i picked up ahood today where its all separated.

if anyone know what this stuff is.....I'd like to see about getting more and redoing those spots on this hood
