Me personally, I would either find another running G180 to drop in, or if it is 75 or older I would go for the small block swap. But that's just me, I am not a G180 fan at all.

Yea it's a 74, what small block would you recommend. I want something with good gas mileage because I want to make this truck my daily driver.

My 72 has a 307 with a 2bbl carb and it's not too bad. A 305 would be a good choice, they are easy to find and enough hp to scoot a Luv along. With all of th LS swaps going on older motors are everywhere at least around me. I will be upgrading to a 350 shortly with a 4bbl myself and I expect my mpg to get worse but mine is a toy not a driver.

Wow. Looks like something locked up.

305s are everywhere and cheap. 350s are everywhere and cheap. You really can't go wrong. The gas mileage won't suck too bad with either one is you drive it nice.

Why did it happen? The timing chain got too loose from wear and climbed up over the sprocket teeth breaking them off.

My first 74 wore out all of the sprockets. I replaced them and kept driving it.

Do you think I should take the head off and check out how it looks underneath? Or just replace the gears?

Well this morning we took the head off to see is there was any damage and thankfully everything is ok. I did have a small leak on my head gasket so I'm going to replace that. I think what happen is that the timing chain tensioner broke some how and this caused the chain to eat up the teeth.

Might anyone have a clue to where I might find the parts I need. Rockauto.com has a few of them but they are out of the timing chain tensioner. Is there a "kit" for the timing chain?

Rock auto has them listed for less than $10. It says they have one left.

Its been awhile since i had one of these apart...

but if i recall correctly the oil pan needs to come off as there are pins or studs in the front of the crank chain cover that go downward which prevent it from pulling forward.

there should be removal steps in shop manuals... what type of shop manual are you using as a reference ?

Ok so I got the cover off, I did have to remove the oil pan. So my parts came in but the tensioner is correct but I need a different one also. The upper one I guess I can call it. Or does anyone know the real name of it.
