Is it possible to remove the tranny to replace the rear main seal and clutch without removing the engine? I have a 79 4x4.

Yes, when I had my stock transmission - transfer case in my truck, I took mine out to put a clutch in it. I had to move it around a lot to miss the cross member. I think I even dissconnected the exhaust pipe from the manifold to move it out of the way.

The manual says remove the transfer case from the tranny. Did you remove yours when taking off the tranny? I'm haveing trouble getting my transfer case off mine and am wondering if it's possible. Also did you have a tough time remold I g the rear main seal with the tranny off?

Many have found it easier to pull the engine.

+1

Removing the whole engine and transmission assembly is very easy in these trucks.

A word of advice, if you go this route, the oil pan will not clear the front valance on the way out. Before you start raising the motor, jack up the front of the truck and remove the wheels and lower the front as much as possible.
