Well. Problems arise again. Carb is screwed. The butterfly (I think that's what it's called?) is stuck open so when I accelerate it just chokes out and dies. If I mess with the flap a bit I can get it to run for maybe a few miles then it just dies again. Can I buy a rebuild kit from Napa or Baxters and rebuild it that way?

Yeah the little hitachi. And no I'd been driving it daily for a while. I pulled the carb off last week, tightened up a bunch of loose stuff, it ran great for a couple days and then started doing the same thing. If I let it idle it just dies, have to constantly give it gas, then it eventually just chokes out and won't start for a while. Maybe my fuel adjustment is off? I dunno. At a loss now!

Haven't even given it a chance to try to run. Been parked for a month or so now. Thinking about either getting a new Hitachi or buying a new Weber. I can get a brand new weber for 375. Not sure if that's a good price or not. Pretty simple swap I'm assuming?

For that price you must be looking at a 38/38. Get the #K662 32/36 DGEV instead for about $100 less. Even with extra compression, a cam & headers the 38/38 is more carb than you will ever need.

It can't be that bad. The Weber makes a really big difference in how it runs

Well. I'm an idiot. I read up on carb issues from a few years back for a few other members and saw someone mentioned vacuum leaks. Everytime I'd open the butterfly, truck would die. So I looked around, and swapped the vacuum lines for the distributor and the one that goes to the air cleaner.....Now she runs. I must have had them hooked up wrong for several years, or just recently swapped them by accident when I had pulled off the carb to clean it and tighten up a bunch of stuff. Does this seem right? Vacuum lines being hooked up wrong could cause it to just die out randomly, even after running for a while perfectly?

Yes it could. Especially if it would run when cold but not when warm or vise versa.

Yeah it wouldn't run when cold at all. But if I sat there and started it, revved it til it died again, over and over again, it would run fine. I'll have to test this out before I start driving it again every day. Last time I thought it was fixed I got stuck on a main road and had to push.

So now she running again your keeping her right ...

them vacuum lines /temps can really get pulled everywhere but once you get them all sorted out they breath pretty good
I used those tee's / Y's in the lines to help direct mine and stay put...

was your hood diagram removed it usually helps me gets them lines pretty close

Hood diagram is there but I don't have any of the smog stuff. But now once truck is warmed up... Dies for the first few minutes until I'm assuming something opens or closes in the carb then I can drive. If I shut it down, then start immediately, same thing.. Dies. I hold the rpms for a minute then it won't die.

Gonna try to drive to work today, we'll see what happens!

kind of sounds like how min has done before & its having to warm up to idle / run
it starts & runs w/ a little peddle and dies if not then down the road it seems like it purrs at are red light then throws me for a loop when things change again...& back to cruising w/ 2 feet :) ...keep dialing in them screws ...i'll help ya where i can.

Ahh gotta LUV the NO smog part....I live in Ca its all stock on mine
...but i have a line on a offy intake & thinking i might pull the smog stuff after my next test for the 2 yrs between tests

Like i said if you have some free time I can come check it out with you and see what I can see. I have the vac tester to see if you have a leak or what may be going on.

Think it could be due to the adjustment screws? I've played with the idle, and mixture, screwed all the way in, then out 1 turn, 1 1/2 turns, 2 turns, 3, back down to a half, and think 1 1/2 is good at the moment, pretty sure I read somewhere before that's the right adjustment for these.

But tested it again after letting it sit for several hours, when it's cold, it starts immediately and stays running. When it's warm, dies unless I hold the RPM's at around 1300 (guessing, no TAC anymore.)

I'm sure your getting close & matter of dialing it in ...I believe you recently upgraded to a Weber carb now... right.

I'm still using a stock carb

I would take... love4theluv...up on his offer... when dialing mine in, i went up near Sacramento to get some parts and compare what we both had going on and was quite helpful to both of us.

& after getting it RUNNING GOOD & PASS SMOG , I wrote down some notes in a few places on blue tape near by & left it there till i knew what was what

I thought about it, but just couldn't come up with that much money right now. Still got the stock hitachi. It's leaking at a few places as well, so could probably be due to that as well.

edit: suddenly having a loud noise coming while starting, at low RPM's. Sounds like my alternator going bad again.

So. Pretty sure a buddy at work nailed it. He noticed the fuel pump wasn't coming on when the key was on. Found out it was only turning on when I was cranking and not filling the carb. He wired it to the key so it's always running when the key is on. Truck runs, doesn't die out, no more issues. Strange thing is I never had this issue in the 10 years I've owned it. Maybe once or twice. He said someone wired this thing all to shit, which I agree with from my issues in the past. But he thinks by some miracle it would somehow keep a siphon and run enough fuel to keep it going. I'll need to add a fuel pressure regulator as well at some point.

Hopefully this is it!
