So I started up the old 72 today after her sitting for awhile. She started screamin, so I thought, "no probem ill pop the hood an take a look." Grabed the handle, gave it a yank, an it brakes off. Cable snapped. Tried pullin on it with pliers with no luck.

if you weren't able to get in a heard a few guys that this happen to and they pulled the grill and hood hinges and that should allow you enough room to get to the latch...G'Luck

Same thing happened to me. The front hood hinge bolts come off fairly easy but with an open end wrench. Slow process. I had to use a long rod(maybe 3 feet) to trip the firewall latch. It is hard to figure where to put the rod for the release. I had to check out my other LUV to know. The latch has a 5/8" pivot pin head at the bottom just to the left of where the latch cable enters the latch. There is a 1 1/2" lever below the pivot pin. Push the lever toward the passenger side to get it to release. You may have to lower the hood so that there is no 'bind' between the hood bar and the latch. Be sure you secure the hood so it doesn't 'flop around' while you're trying to get the latch open or you might bend everything up. LUVs were not made of the heaviest metals. You may have trouble getting a new cable. Save the old cable and housing because you can make one fairly easily. That's how I replaced mine.
