How exactly do you do a commpression test what are the steps. I got this commpression gauge from a friend that gave it to me but I dont know how to read it. Happy turkey day ya all. And my generator light comes on when the truck is above idle and I just bought a new alternator should it be doing this

the compression check is relatively easy, take all the spark plugs out, screw in the gauge and turn the key on and allow the engine to turn over a couple of times. after that there should be a little button to press to release the pressure on the gauge. repeat this on all 4 cylinders. my book says it should be above 120 pounds. but mine ran fine at 90 pounds. each cylinder should not be more than pounds. on the topic of the gen light u might need to replace ur voltage regulator.

yup just thread the comp gage into the spark plug holes and turn the motor over for about 5seconds. then read, record and reset the gage. Reapaet on all the cylinders. As far as the gem light, i would count on the voltage regulator, but it has been known that some parts aere faulty from the parts store. If you have the time i would take the alt. in to get it checked (this is usually free) and if its bad you can trade it in on warenty(most parts stores warenty thier parts for this reason). If things check out, then get a voltage regulator.

Yes I agree with Mepr, you should get your Alt checked first if it is good then go for the Voltage reg. Believe it or not the Voltage regulator cost me more than my new alterantor did! So just a suggestion.
