What's the trick to get the distributor into the oil pump shaft? Dinked around with it for 2 hours last night. Have the offset set up right it just won't slide into the slot.. It is a new oil pump. Any tips on this?

I don't know. They always just dropped in fairly easily for me. Are you sure its the correct oil pump? Can you look down in there with a flashlight and see the slot?

Yeah I can see the slot offset like the pic in the manual.

Did you check it before you installed the pump? Possible the pump got dropped at some point and the slot is too narrow...

I assume you tried turning the distributor rotor by hand while installing in case it helps to line it up better. I would look at the slot and the distributor end to see if it looks the same and should fit. Then you might just file very lightly the sharp edges on the distributor end so the tapor will start to guide it in better.

Best luck I had was to line up the oil pump slot with the distributor key way before installing using a long screw driver
I believe it has to be lined up taking into account the twist from the cam gear but its been a while they may move together.

If i remember correctly, the oil pump gear is keyed to the crankshaft so it doesn't move unless you turn the crankshaft.
Not like all my Chevys where you could stick a screw driver down there and line it up. Like i said, from memory only.

Can't remember for sure I did a Chevy engine more recently than the 4 banger.
Must be a minor hangup in there like a burred edge cuz its pretty easy to install a distributor in the g series

Thanks for all the replies, been busy with work but will give it another shot this weekend when I get home. Just don't want to ruin my newly rebuilt motor.

Is your engine at #4 TDC like it's supposed to be after a rebuild with all the crank, cam & oil pump marks aligned? If so the dizzy should drop right in and be at #4 TDC also.

That I don't know. I can only assume as I had the engine sent out to be rebuilt. The guy that did it has done isuzu engines in the past..

For #4 TDC:
The crank pulley mark should be at 0 degrees & the cam gear alignment dowel should be straight up. The oil pump slot should be parallel with the front of the block with the offset towards the front.

Tried starting it up, but it won't fire. Just kinda poppa and backfires out of the carb. Is this a symptom of my timing being way off?

Yes. Make sure the plug wires are on in the correct order and make sure the timing is at least close.

My guess is a common mistake---timing set up to #1 instead of #4. If so just move the wires in the cap. 1-3-4-2. Distributor turns counter clockwise.
