So I have a luv repair manual and I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the lash on an 1981 1.8l stock engine. My main problem is, how can I get each piston at TDC so I can adjust the valves? I don't have a huge socket for turning the engine by the crank pulley, and I have tried to rock the truck back and forth while in 1st gear to get the engine to move, and it works but I can't tell when the #1 piston is at TDC. Though on my timing gear I can clearly see the marks along with the chain marks, if I get the chain mark to get to the very top of the gear by rotating, would that help me at all?

Take the spark plugs out, the engine turns better.

You don't have to have each piston to TDC to set the valve lash, you only have to have the cam follower on the round heel of the lobe, which is more than half the diameter of the cam. A repair manual should have a valve adjust sequence, if yours doesn't get one that does. Short version you set the crank & cam to TDC at #1 or #4 using the crank & cam timing marks, then adjust the four valves that are on the correct part of the cam lobe. Then rotate the engine 1 full revolution and adjust the rest of the valves. With the plugs removed & the tranny in neutral you should be able to turn the engine by hand using the accessories belts.
