 Post subject: Interchangeable Trannys?
PostPosted: Sat Nov 29, 2003 12:55 am
Can anyone tell me what years are interchangeable for trannys. Some say 72-75 then 76-78...then 79-82. Others say 72-77 and 78-82. :o Any help would be great. Is it the same with engines??? 8O

I dont think that you can put an 82 tranny into a 78. the are two completely diferent series and body styles. but from 72 up to, i think 75 the engine is the same, then from 76 to 80 the engines are the same.

Well, looking at all of the history on the forum, it looks like the 72-75 will interchange because the starter is on the driver side. 76 on up has the starter on the passenger side. The 78 they went to a cable clutch system so in order to put a 78 tranny on a 76 body I need new linkage and a modified mount where it exits the firewall. Most people are saying that I should get rid of the slave cylinder and go with cable.....any thoughts??

I've never replaced a clutch cable on my 79. I've rebuilt the slave cylinder three time and replaced the clutch master cylinder twice on my 77. I only rebuilt the slave cyl on my 76 once, but I only drove it about a year before it got hit by a bridge. Two words: GO CABLE.

I am not getting information out of the book on the 72-74's, but I know when I push the clutch pedal it goes to the floor effortlessly.

Did they have the cable or the hydro?
