So I got a 79 chevy luv 1.8. 4x4. it says Mikado on the glove box. It has been sitting a few years the old owner said. I'm not sure if its Charging. I need to get the alternator checked but old owner said it was new and looks new. The regulator looks old and the battery came back good as autozone charged and checked it. It looks like some wires were fried. I fix them. The negative cable was insulated so I replaced it and cleaned the grounds that I found. I also added new gas. cleaned the carb. it has cleared out with occasional back fire. it does not idle. immediately stalls. I'm not sure what else to tell you. Thanks for the help.

Did you flush the fuel line, gas tank and replace the filter? There is also a filter in the pump that can get clogged but it's very hard to service. Almost easier to get a new pump. Could just be the typical Hitachi carb issues. May need a rebuild depending on how long it's been sitting.

It's running though! That's a plus!

Its been sitting for 2 years. I added dry gas and filled the tank because it was empty and replaced a cracked fuel line. it goes good down hill and losses power up hill. I'm taking the carb off today. I got the rebuild kit. I'll get a new fuel filter. whats the best way to flush the line? disconnect it at the carb and run the pump?

Yep, thats what I did. Just dip the supply and return lines into a cut-open 2 liter bottle with some fuel in it. That way you can see how much crud spits out of the circuit. I added an extra in-line filter between the tank and the fuel pump to get around messing with that hard-to-reach in-tank filter mentioned above. It's just one of those cheap transparent ones, but being able to see fuel flowing from tank to pump makes troubleshooting a bit easier.

I blew the head gasket about a day after getting the carb issues solved though, so good luck! LUVs don't like to sit for that long.

Oh, before you tear the carb off, make sure there is good power to your auto choke and that it is functioning as it should. I guess the contacts at the fuse block tend to be unreliable. I would almost believe this is more likely the culprit than a debris-clogged carb. Especially if the line-clearing method I mentioned above doesn't spit any debris out.

The fuel was clear coming out the line. The only thing that concerned me was the fuel wasnt a constant pressure. it was sputtering out and the pump is loud. shouldn't the fuel be a constant volume instead of spitting out the line?

Pretty much, yea, but it's kind of a tuff one to judge...

If it's really bad, I'd say the cost of replacement would be worth isolating that particular variable.

...and if that isn't your issue, now you've got a backup fuel pump.
