So, I got a 1980 4x4. We have just finished installing the rebuilt engine. The fusible link (the little section of wire right off the battery) kept shorting out. and I guess it's supposed to do that to protect the rest of the electrical system. As we were messing with it, we put the ground on the battery first, then the power and it magically worked. So, we fired it up and proceeded to adjust the distributor. The next day, we go to fire it up, nothing. Just the starter cranking the shaft and nothing else. We thought there was something wrong with the fusible link, so we replaced it with two 30 amp in line fuses. Now the the large diameter black wire blows a fuse every time we try to connect the battery. So we traced the wire all the way through the harness and still cannot figure out the problem... one step forward, two steps back. How did it go from running the other day to shorting out for no apparent reason? Let me know if I can provide any other details. Thanks in advance for the advice.

The wire that runs from the battery to the alternator is the one that is shorting out.

Turns out we had the alternator mis-grounded.
