Hi,
I just bought a 80 4x4 Luv. Got it in the shop today and got the the truck running, but found out the tranny has a terrible howl in all gears but 4th 8O . I drained the oil and it had alot of metal including some bigger pieces. So what our my options? I have a good 2wd tranny will it bolt up to the transfer case?
Thanks,

Nope t case wont bolt to a 2wd tranny. On this site search up the 4x4 5 speer conversion from a early model 2.3 pup or trooper.
Or another 4speed 4wd

No.

The reason it howls in every gear but 4th--it's because 4th does not use the countershaft, being direct drive. Your countershaft most likely has at least one bad bearing.

While you have the trany out anyway you might consider just rebuilding yours. Replace the bad counter shaft bearings and good to go.

That's really not rebuilding, that's repairing. But if it hasn't chewed the gears up, maybe that would do it. The howling is not a good sign.

Thanks for your reply's. I bought this truck to drive while I do a diesel swap in my 80 4x2,so replacing the bearings sound like a good option to me if that would fix the problem for a while as the sooner I get it on the road the better. How available are parts for it? Can you just get them at napa or is there a better place?
Also if I pull the tranny is there room to change the main seal on the engine without pulling it,or should I just pull the engine and tranny as a unit?

The only source of bearings I know is a company that used to go by the name "All Transmission" and now I think they're http://www.transtar1.com. They only sell to shops, so you may have to have a shop get the parts. You have to tear down the whole transmission to replace bearings, other than the front and rear ones. Your gears may be chewed up, too.

Since yours is 4wd, it makes the 5-speed replacement option a longshot--they're extremely hard to find. I know someone who had a few brand-new 4x4 4-speeds on pallets and was selling them DIRT cheap. Want me to ask him about them?

Yes please,I drove it today in 4wd and it wants to pop out of 4wd. I don't know much about trannys but this one seems to be about wore out? So I'm interested in just replacing it if I can find one at a reasonable price.

I emailed my friend who had a few for sale. Unfortunately, he sold the last one a couple of years ago.

I'm not so sure, either. I don't think the 1.8L/5-speed were ever offered together. The 5-speed 4wd did not appear until 1986, so it was NEVER in the LUV.

I didn't build mine but I have a trooper 5spd and 4wd. Cost me 2 grand for a rebuild when my tranny was howling. 4th was quiet too. Needed bearings and the shaft machined and everything.

You can look on car-part.com for what's available in your area.
There's one on e-bay but shipping may be too high.
Any 4sp 4x4 tranny from a '79-'85 Chevy LUV or Isuzu P'UP or Trooper with a gas engine is a direct interchange.
With the right mods you can get a 4x4 gas engine '86-'87 P'UP or Trooper 5spd to work.

I have a 2wd tranny if i disconect the front drive shaft is there any reason that it would not work? I think there is a different rear spline but i also have the 2wd drive shaft.

Been doing some looking and found a 86 trooper 5spd 2.3 gas. Will this bolt directly to my 1.8? And do I need any other parts to do the swap such as driveline or or will my rear driveline just need to be shorten.

The 5sp will bolt to your engine & uses the same clutch as the 4sp.
The 4sp tranny support crossmember needs to be cut out & relocated rearwards or a new one fabricated & installed. Make it removable while at it.
The shifter holes through the pan will probably need relocated, at least the t-case.
You will need at least the slip yoke for the rear of the tranny from the Trooper driveline, 4sp & 5sps have a different spline count. Then mate the 5sp tranny yoke to the rear portion of your driveshaft & shorten the whole thing to the correct length. Or have the 2-piece Trooper shaft re-tubed to a 1-piece the correct length.
The 5sp is a stronger unit than your 4sp. Use of 5th gear may be limited, the 1.8 engine & 4.10 gears just don't produce enough power. You could swap in the Trooper 4.56-geared 3rd members & gain back the highway power & increase off-road power at the same time, but it's an involved process to change the front differential.

Actually, according to all I've seen, the old 4-speed 4wd transmissions should have the same spline count as the Trooper. The smaller shafts with coarser splines were on the 2wd 4-speeds. Count the splines on your output shaft. If you have 27, that's what the Trooper has. Regardless, you will still have to shorten your driveshaft.

Wouldn't that also open up the possibility of getting an LSD rear end? My Amigo has a 4.56 LSD from a Trooper.

Not easily- '86 Trooper & '80 LUV both have 54" wide 10-bolt rears, the Turbo Impulse 10-bolt LSD carrier could be swapped in (or a Lokka/Aussie Locker will work with the right custom parts) but any other LSD would require an entire rear axle assembly swap, all of which are at least 4" wider.
