Yes take the 4 large bolts on each end of the housing off. Then you can pull the axles out 4-5 inches to free up the carrier.

still having trouble separating the axle from the bearing and brake assembly, took nut and washer and everything apart but axle wants to stay with bearing and such. been soaking in wd 40 for a few days after soking in pb blaster for a few days, although none of it appears to be rusty it still won't budge,, need to get them apart for a friend who wants the axles and a fella on the internet is buyng the brake and bearing assembly.

They are supposed to be pressed off & back on.

this truck has some serious engineering flaws, ok so u have to overhaul the rear end and axles just to change out a brake cylinder or a lug stud? that's about as smart as having to overhaul the front end to replace cv axles.. is there anymore of this madness? should I go ahead and take the taillights off to change the sparkplugs and then maybe grease the muffler bearings.......... :? this is exactly the reason why I am doing this swap is to delete all of the backwards engineering that makes this joke of a truck.

EDIT: I thought you were just trying to replace the wheel cylinders. Look, the LUV was overbuilt in many areas. It's not fair to start saying that the way this was done is stupid. In the average LUV the wheel bearings will out live the truck. This is not the only MFGR to build a rear end this way. This is the only time in this site that I have seen a person sell the backing plate separate of the axel.

Axel bearing is pressed onto the axel. Also into backing plate. Not stupid, common way to do this. Very reliable and trouble free usually for the life of the truck.
Yes, frustating to do yourself but it works great most of the time.
