I have had some issue with the head gasket losing the seal between cylinders 3 and 4. I have also purchased some parts motors and they had the same issue. The last time I rebuilt my 180 I bought the best head studs I could from ARP and resurfaced the head and deck. I got about 20,000 before the head gasket failed. Looks to me like a heat issue almost like the coolant flow is not enough to carry the heat away in the back. Has anyone else seen/solved this problem?

I think people usually have problems between 2/3 where the gap is narrowest. I had an issue with one head i had blowing bwtween 2/3, had a spare machined and it lasted quite a while until i got bored of the 1.8. Maybe check the water jackets for a clog or look for a kinked/crushed coolant line, not sure what else could be a problem in the back of the block

Be sure to re torque head bolts after several thousand miles. And definitely after any over heating.
