Hey people

My truck is acting weird....

It was driving fine but then all the sudden my gen light came on and just dyed .... It started back up but then dyed again when I gave it some gas...

I pulled over and started it again... Would idle but as soon as I let up on the clutch... The engine died again...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If the gen light came on that means that you are not charging. If you are not charging then the fuel pump relay is not energized, the pump will not run. First see if you are charging, fix that and it should run again.

Maybe fuse box connections/problems. If generator light comes on fuel pump will stop as above. If that happens, unplug the voltage regulator, the fuel pump will run, and you can drive home.

Possibly a new regulator but I would check a few other things first (do the cheap stuff). Check wiring to alternator, check , clean connections to the fuse box, fuse holders etc.

Does gen light turn off after starting engine and revving it up a little? If it does then generator is working. The electrical idle circuit may be malfunctioning causing the no idle issue. Idle solenoid is located under the air filter housing on carb next to the accelerator pump arm. It has a single wire coming off of it. Check for 12 volts on that wire while engine is running. If no voltage is found that is your problem. Let us know what you find out.

Seems be a habit more and more, bad condenser out of the box, bad regulator out of the box. Usually means an argument with the auto parts guy who points to the large sign saying---NO RETURN ON ELECTRICAL ITEMS.

ok so the problem is actually still happening... so now i have changed the voltage reg, coil, and fuel pump and now i cant even get her to start... (before it would start but then die) she turns over, but is getting NO fuel....

my pump is not buzzing or anything.. but is super loud when i try to start the truck...

im pretty sure now my problem is between the fuel tank and the pump?

maybe some old bad fuel lines?

any tricks on changing the fuel lines without dropping the tank?

thanks guys!

If you're sure you've narrowed it down to that section of tube between the fuel tank and the pump, the 'bottleneck' is the pickup nozzle in the tank, which I think has a little sock around it usually. If you ask me, there isn't much point to fussing with that line unless you get to the bottleneck.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

None of the LUVs I've had ever had the tank apart had a sock/filter on the pickup tube inside the tank. The pickup tube just goes straight down above a round indent in the tank bottom and is open on the end.

I did have one truck that sat for a long time with some of the fuel tank hoses unhooked. A fat winter yellowjacket wasp had crawled in one of the hoses and gotten into the tank. It died, but every so often its body would get sucked up the tube and wedge like a cork against the inlet tube of the filter right above the tank. I'd check the filter, blow air into the tank (pushing the dead bug back into the tank) and find nothing wrong. The truck would then run ok for a while until it sucked up the corpse again. I finally looked carefully in the hose when I pulled it off the filter and found the problem.

Between the tank and pump you can have holes in the line and not drip/leak much fuel too. The pump can suck air instead of fuel and do what you describe. Unless you have a body lift there is not much chance of changing out the lines without dropping the tank down some. Just be careful with the rubber filler hose. It isn't too easy to find a replacement part if you decide its easier to cut it off and replace.

ok so i drove her all day today with no issues...

i changed the rubber fuel lines starting at the (out side) of the fuel filter by the tank....

so from filter to pump and pump to metal fuel line under the cab and then all the rubber lines under the hood....

the old stuff had no BIG holes or leaks... but there were a few damps spots... just old and seepy i guess

so the big problem the whole time was air>fuel :/

sheesh i should have inspected those lines closer, earlier .... DUMMY ME!

anyhow... thanks for all the help guys!!
