Hi,
I have a 1980 luv that does not start (fire) when using the starter. When i stick a multimeter on the coil (with key on) i get almost 9v when i crank it it goes down to 2-5v.Any help would be appreciated as i'm not very skilled at electrical stuff. I am running ignitor 2 with flamethrower coil.

Points systems need the ballast resistor but many electronic systems do not. Is yours still in the circuit? That could drop the voltage too much. Just a thought.

That voltage is too low. If you checked your battery, look for bad connections in your fuse box or somewhere before the coil.

My battery has over 12v, but at the coil I only have around 9v and when i crank it it drops to as low as 2-3v.I installed the ignitor this summer and it did seem to start harder than before but always started but now that i'ts colder it will not start.A push start enough to turn the engine over starts it right up,so i'm thinking i must not have hooked it up correctly. I have a black /red, black/blue and a black/yellow wire, currently i only have the black/yellow wire hooked to the + side of the coil and the others just hanging there. Your help is very much appreciated as this is my only ride so i need to keep it on the road to get to work (25 miles one way). Push starting gets old.

Black and blue comes from the coil resistor bypass relay, which may or may not be installed, but doesn't matter because you don't need the resistor. So it can be left off. The red and black goes to the negative post on the coil, and yellow/black to positive post. The blue/black would also go to positive but again, doesn't apply here. Also yeah the OEM fuse boxes are a PITA, I cleaned mine in vinegar then soldered all of the wire connections on the bottom so that its hardwired in. Solved all kinds of voltage/current issues for me.
