Are parts still readily available for them ? I read here not to bother with pre 86, but was thinking if they were serviced right by using motor oil and changing it regularly, using 5th gear above 45mph, etc the trans could last.

Parts are available but not at retail. And what you read is true--if serviced right, and kept out of 5th at low speeds, they last longer. But why bother with them, when the '86 and later are available?

NOT ON MINE

it took like a month for a rebuild because parts werent readily available. i didnt install mine so I don't know what year it is.

Now that mine is done the 1-2 shift is real tough until the tranny warms up.

Had to get a whole bunch of stuff machined and I dont know if the synchros are set in right.

Under 45mph is less than 2000 rpm and I try not to do that in any gear.

I have a digital tach with an error of 60 rpm and all my other trucks ran at 2880 rpm at 60 mph and this one runs at 2820 so there is barely a difference on the freeway. I'm not sure it's worth it.
