This morning I installed a Petronix on my 1976 LUV. My truck now runs like complete $#!%.
My question is what to do with the black with red stripe wire that originally attached to the same post (now removed) as the condenser? I left it hanging and now the truck just barely runs and has no response when the gas pedal is pushed. I know that wire is to the "engine speed sensor" and so I assume it detects the pulses of the dizzy and "computes" them for the stock carb. I"m waiting until next summer to upgrade to the Weber carb so what to do with this in the mean time? Any help is always appreciated.

I called and spoke with Pertonix and they said to hook the speed sensor wire to the coil negative. I checked my wiring diagram and it seems that that makes sense but... When I do I just blow the 15A fuse labeled fuel pump and emissions each time I try to fire it up.
Is pertronix just more of a PITA than it is worth on the LUV? I have it on my other car and it was super simple and has been worry free for 8 years. I'd like that kind of reliability from my LUV as well.

Did you re time the engine after installing the pertronix?sounds like the timing is retarded. You must re time after the install.

But would retarded timing blow my fuel pump/ emissions fuse? I would think not. I'm going to futz with it a little tomorrow and then take it off, put it on the shelf and accept my points. Damn.

The alternative is a p'up electronic distributor. When i built my 1.8 i used a 1985 isuzu pup distributor from the 1.9 engine. It is a direct bolt in replacement for the stock distributor and its just two wires one to + and one to - on the coil

I believe he was talking about your initial issue before you hooked that wire up...

L was talking about the first issue. Tomorrow morning I will look at a wiring diagram and get back to you.

I'm sure the timing will need an adjustment once I can get it to run. Heh. I appreciate your having a look at the wiring and giving feedback. Since it was previously hooked to the condenser at the dizzy I assume that now, hooked to the coil direct it is basically getting to much juice and blowing the fuse. If I turn it on but don't try and start it all is fine. I can hear the fuel pump kick on and nothing pops. As soon as I go to start it though... Pop. Dead fuse, no go.
Anyway, thanks a million.

I looked it up and I am stumped. I do know that if a key is left on and the points are in a certain position it will cause the coil to smoke, I don't think this is the issue here. The speed sensor does nothing except to help the coasting richer circuit work, most don't work and if the smog has been removed in my opinion it's not needed anyway. My opinion is the pertronix up grade is great and out weighs the coasting richer working. Disconnect the wire going to the speed sensor at the coil, get the truck in time and drive it, see what you think. I think the way the pertronix is installed it retarded the ignition, advance it, start it and time it, you will see a differance.

I think you're probably right but since I could not get it running this afternoon I just put the points back in it and put the pertronix on the shelf for now. It was severely out of time when I put it all back together somehow so I would hazard a guess the time was off and I could have left that little bugger of a wire hanging loose... Next time. The short days and chill in the air are telling me to wait for a warmer day.
I bought my truck from the estate of an old farmer so it is bone stock currently, including all the smog stuff. The Weber, the de-smog and now the pertronix are all on my list as time permits...
Thanks for all the advice. I'm sure I'll be hitting you all up for some more soon enough.
