I don't see anything in the manual that says expansion valve. Are you talking about the tank?

Was A/C even a factory unit in '77, or was it a dealer add-on? If dealer, it may be non-standard (aftermarket).

If by chance it's like the 2nd-gen models, the expansion valve is in the evaporator plumbing (inside the evaporator housing).

I have a '77 and the evaporator and piping are visible up front and the heater/defrost/ac selector lever in the cab seems to indicate stock a/c installation. I don't have a compressor though. Come to think of it, I don't think there is a mount bracket on the engine for it either.

A/c was a factory option. The expansion valve is behind the black box in the cab on the passenger side, where the evaporator is. It's between the plastic box and the firewall. GM part number 94023480. See item 5 in the photo.

Strange, I found the part but it says it's for a Volvo.
