As the title states, anyone here do business with RockAuto.com ?

I buy just about every part I need for my Z from them and have had great transactions.

So, I got my parts list ready for my Luv, but I have a question.

Under 1980 Chevy Luv, for the starter motor (under electrical tab) the first option, the VISTA-PRO starter (Part # 16270, Reman series 5-12); does it come with the solenoid or do I have to order that separate? I could probably e-mail RockAuto and get my answer from them but it won't arrive until the morning, I want to get the parts ordered tonight...

i would email them, the ones without a pic are hard to guess with  for a few bucks more you can get one that is pictured with one and they always seem to be shipped exactly as pictured.
i get a ton of my parts from rockauto i have an email box full of shipping and order info from them, i have some valves and gaskets on the way right now. between rockauto and ebay you can find pretty much everything your going to need for your truck.

Awesome!

So just dumped like $135 on parts, that probably would've cost me twice that at the store ;)

Air filter, fuel filter

Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil.

Starter, BMC, brake pads

And a universal coolant recovery tank since the OE one seems to be missing? (Radiator filler neck has a port for a over flow hose, so I need one either way unless I want my coolant spraying all over the place haha...)

Speaking of coolant recovery, had a Jeep come into the shop today with a orange juice bottle rigged up to be the over flow tank LOL

One of their reps joined IsuzuPup.com to post discount codes and occasional specials (that never include parts we need ;) ). We've had mixed reviews, but most seem to be satisfied.

I have a few horror stories about dealing with them. I've eventually gotten some degree of satisfaction, but on two occasions I had to escalate my issue and get reeeeeeeally ugly with them.

The problem seems to be with the manufacturers' application data. If the manufacturer says a part fits an '83 P'up, and I order it from RockAuto, and it doesn't fit--they check with the manufacturer again. If the manufacturer won't admit the discrepancy, RockAuto refuses to take the customer's word. Shame on them!

But like I said, most folks seem to be happy with them.

Oh, and when ordering multiple items, they sometimes come from multiple warehouses. They kill you on the shipping charges if the order is not all in one shipment.

I use them all the time too. Be sure to look for a discount code every time you order. 5% knocked off every time and the codes are always available. Google rockauto discount code and you should find several. They even encourage sharing the codes.

I got a seriously warped throwout bearing from them once in a clutch kit. They said I could buy just the bearing local and send them the receipt and they paid for it. Can't complain.

They do ship from multiple locations but their cart and online order system will tell you if parts ship from the same location. The site puts a little truck logo on parts listed that ship from the same location as items already in your cart. They really make it pretty easy to pick items based on shipping. Again, can't complain.

I'd guess the starter comes complete with the solenoid. I've never seen one that didn't for a LUV but I could be wrong.

LUVs (at least 1st Gens) didn't come with a factory coolant overflow tank. The hose ran down and let the coolant overflow onto the ground.

Not sure about Rockauto for LUV stuff, they didn't seem to have anything I needed for mine but was surprised they had some really hard to find stuff for my 39 chevy and a lot cheaper than anyone else. One thing I thought was kind of cool with them is they send out a magnet with every order that has a different customers car on it. As for the overflow bottle, I just found these on Ebay and was wondering if they could be adapted to the first gens.

Ben may want to invite RockAuto to join the site. Send an email to marketing@rockauto.com about the forum. It's good to have someone on the site who will point you in the right direction, if you do have a problem.

I find good deals on parts from www.partsgeek.com. I have not bought LUV stuff from them but a ton of other stuff.

I'm a big customer of RockAuto. Just about everything I buy for parts for my 300ZX comes from them, or one of the smaller businesses that sell the secret after market parts that no one can find ;) Never had a bad transaction, shipping is always fast.

I usually get discount codes e-mailed to me from RockAuto, usually 5%, along with their news letters (never really read them but eh). Here is the last one I received:

1642376211930840
Expires: September 29, 2013

RockAuto is the best usually. Though sometimes it is better to get the item from the store (like oil filters, or gas caps). They have all the brands you love at below retail prices, and even after shipping costs you still usually end up spending less than you would at Auto-Zone or Pepboys etc. I've spent well over $2K with them, and plan on continuing to give them my business.

I like that I can look up the parts myself and find exactly what I need. I hate it when I go into Auto-Zone and ask them for a part and the employee either can't find it or doesn't know what you're talking about...

The one thing to remember when buying from discounters, it the shipping cost. Add that to the parts and sometimes local will be cheaper and you can do a little touchy feely if you need to verify. A large order does not alway equate to low cost shipping as RockAuto ships from multiple locations.

Do your homework.

what i do is try to buy $100 or more in parts per order and try to find as many quality parts as I can from the same location, they show a truck next to the item to show its from the same warehouse, a part costing a few bucks more costs less overall after shipping is combined.

I've done my homework... This isn't my first rodeo. I built my 300ZX with nothing but RockAuto parts. (Literaly, that car was sitting on blocks with 50% of the parts missing when I bought it.)

Depends. On the parts I just bought for my LUV it was ~$135 shipped (bought quite a few items) coming from 3 different warehouses. For those parts all from Auto-Zone it was almost $200. Also, any part that ships from the same warehouse as the parts in your cart will have a notation at the bottom of the part listing for that part saying "^Ships from same warehouse as parts in cart."

In comparison to Auto-Zone's pricing, I've always checked the pricing and 9 times out of 10, even coming from multiple warehouses, its still cheaper over all. The only time the shipping bites you in the ass is if you buy a small amount. I always try to buy in bulk, though even then if I buy one item, after shipping its still usually cheaper. Some cases though it is cheaper to go to the store, but not often enough for me to always go to the store. Most parts stores suck anyways.

^That. Usually works, but in some cases if you really like a certain brand, it still comes out cheaper from multiple warehouses, it all depends on RockAuto's pricing and shipping costs.

I think my favorite Rockauto feature is the part number cross reference. If you are looking at a part, click the part number and it will bring up a list of other makes/models/years that use the same part. It won't always be right and it doesn't tell you which motor or option that part is used on for a particular year, but its a good start. I've looked up parts, cross referenced them with Rockauto, then grabbed the part from another vehicle it is found in at the junk yard.

I find myself buying extra stuff I don't need right away from them just because it ships from the same warehouse as the parts I do need. If you stack shipping right on a large order it is easy to beat local prices. If you are just ordering one or two $20-30 items then local can sometimes beat the price/shipping from RA. Just have to use common sense.

Their cross reference is awesome.

I also like how with some parts they have the different grades, usually economy, OE quality and performance/heavy duty. Helps me to buy the good stuff because if they have something that has a economy grade, I stay away from it. Economy parts are the ones you buy if you don't mind it breaking a week later. ;) </sarcasm> economy grade parts are crap, but they are useful if you're short on cash and need something fixed quick.

I burned thru a couple sets of economy brake pads, both had one that broke/cracked the pad  the quality listing is really handy for comparing prices vs quality too. I try to stick to the higher end of the scale. "economy parts" are the kind of parts you end up with at costless  but I agree sometimes buying the name brand you know is better is worth the extra few bucks for shipping 8) im ordering the last of the parts I will need for my build tomorrow

 I bought some economy pads for the Luv, but that is just so I can get it on the road to give my Z some vacation time ASAP. (Z is over due for a tranny swap and rear end revamp) As long as they last more than a month I'll consider them a good buy haha.

As for my build, not sure what I'm going to do, get it running good and drive it for a while probably. I'm going to paint it eventually (hopefully sooner than later) and also going to rhino-line the bed and find a tool box to mount on it, it shows evidence of already having one in the past too. (Not sure if they came stock with the holes already there or...?) Possibility of selling it down the road is also there, but the more I look at it the more I want to keep it. Guess it comes down to how reliable it will be for me.

LOL'd

I guess RockAuto must be busy. Some of my parts arrived today for the Luv, and everything arrived correct except for the starter. They send me a a/c compressor instead of a starter. lul getting it taken care of

Cool, correct part (starter) will be shipped out Monday, and the rep on the phone told me that I can keep the A/C compressor.
