worth a shot at that point
hows it runnin other than that

runs great. doesn't even seem like it's actually over heating, other than the gauge. no smell, no crazy noises, but I'd rather not risk it at this point. lol. Just repaired all my slashed tires but one a few weeks ago

Hook up a mechanical gauge and go from there. Stock gauge might be reading incorrectly and it might not even be overheating

yeah I would make sure it is reading right it may just be a faulty sensor

I've had my 80 LUV since new. I think its been just about 300,000 miles. In that time I have had to have the radiator rodded out twice.
The last time was just this week. The symptom was overheating on a long grade or on the freeway when its really hot outside. We have an old school radiator guy in town here. $65 to pull the top tank off, rod it out, and reassemble. He said that the tubes were 3/4 stopped up. It stands to reason that lots of our radiators could use the same treatment.

I was driving to work the other day and out of nowhere started hearing a loud grinding noise, that would persist at higher RPMs. Could it be the water pump that maybe has slowly gone bad over time that could be causing the over heating ? I'm not completely ruling out the radiator yet, just leaving it til last since I had a family friend look at it who ran some tests and said nothing was wrong with it. Still not sure what I think about the guy though and his ability to diagnose things properly.

I'm just wondering if these old pumps could fail, and how they would fail. When I pulled it off last year and looked at it I wasn't too sure how to tell if it was bad. Just assumed that if I could spin it everything was A OK, but ran into some impeller issues on my passat where it broke and spun freely, so that got me thinking. Especially with that damn noise.

Any input from anyone? I ordered a new water pump for 8 bucks online, figured might as well replace it and who knows, maybe that could solve my issues.

Also going to pull the thermostat and run it without it to see if it stays below op temperature. Any negatives to running without a tstat other than not running at recommended operating temp?

Removing the thermastat lets the water pump too fast, it won't stay in the radiator long enough to get cooled.

Water pump? Could be but relatively easy to check. Remove the fan belt, disconnect the voltage regulator connector, and start and run the engine for a minute. No noise means either the water pump or the alternator.
Thermostat? No problem other than as noted the engine may not get to proper operating temperature. If radiator is clogged it will still over heat but just take longer to get up there.

I've got a video of the noise. I replaced the water pump but of course it's still overheating, although for a few seconds I took the radiator cap off, could see the water flowing really well. Gave it some gas, water slowed down, overheated, etc. As much as I don't want it to be the radiator that's really the only thing I'm assuming it's going to be. I'm going to pull the thermostat and see how it runs for a while. Also going to replace the alternator with one of my older ones to see if that noise goes away. I'll have a video uploaded in a few minutes.

Let me know of your thoughts. Hopefully someone has dealt with this noise before.

Edit;; Just looked on youtube and it sounds similar to a few videos so its probably the bearing? Gonna replace it today so we'll see how that goes.

Replaced the new alternator (or newish, couple years old, but barely driven with), with the old one and the sound is gone. So it must've been the bearing. Also noticed that the original alt is huge compared to the one I had in there. Not sure if that necessarily makes a difference.

I have a set of aftermarket gauges that I never used somewhere. I should probably hook those up at some point. I think they have oil pressure, temp, etc. I was always too scared to hook them up because I had no idea what I was doing. At this point I've ripped this truck apart and put it back together so many times, why the hell not. haha

i would hook up the new gauges and see what temp it reads, have you replaced the temp sensor?

I must've tossed the gauges years ago cleaning out my garage. Yeah I've replaced the temp sensor. It was shortly after you helped me get it fired up and fixed the alternator issue. :P I've replaced the thermostat as well but it could have been with one that doesn't work correctly. You still got that radiator you were trying to get rid of last year? Or was it a few years ago? Time has flown by.. lol

Well, it seems my luck just keeps getting worse. Took out the t-stat and remembered one of the threads going into the intake was almost at it's last breath, and poof, stripped trying to put the bolt back in. Not sure if there's a way to fix the threaded portion of the intake or if I need to get a new intake now. I tried to get it partially threaded in thinking it would be sealed enough but it spews coolant everywhere.

Looks like she'll be sitting for a while til I get the funds together to buy some new parts, which would be never.

Sweet!

Edit;; Does anyone know the thread size? I could always try to find a cheap thread repair kit I guess?

you might be able to get it with a tap.. not totally sure depends on how badly pulled out the threads were

Yeah I just have to figure out where I can find those kinds of tools lol. Would going up to the next size bolt work? I've read you can force them in but I'm sure that would destroy it even more.
