so a couple weeks ago i switched out the fuel cell for the stock gas tank, poured some gas in and fired it up. it was idling perfectly but then i relized i had a fuel leak. turns out i forgot a clamp on the return line. anyway got that fixed but now it wont start on its own. you have to put your hand over the carb to suck in fuel. so the question is, is this a carb issue? its the stock hitachi one (i know they are junk) or my fuel pump dying? i can hear the pump and its only a few months old

If you can hear it from anywhere other than lying under the truck right next to it probably the pump is going bad. Make sure to keep the filter clean between the tank and the pump, they don't like dirt or rust. Stuff that will burn fine through a carb will toast an electric fuel pump.

Make sure you have fuel filters in line before and after the pump.

i do, should probably change them out though. my fuel cell had a bunch of dirt inside that probably led to the death of the pump

Make sure to keep a couple of filters in the truck just in case. Also a good idea to keep an extra pump behind the seat...my pumps don't make it more than a year.

I live in South Dakota. The pumps aren't perfectly sealed so the electrical gets dirt and sand in them. And to make matters worse I drive on rough gravel roads quite a bit and the pump gets smacked with rocks etc. And my cross member is bent where the pump is usually mounted so there is not as much protection where i have it mounted. There had been a recall on two of the pumps I had.
I am seriously thinking about buying a 200 dollar pump and mounting a fuel cell so I can hold more fuel and use a better pump.
