After messing with the ignition for a couple days I checked to see of the distributor was rotating and it's not. So I pulled it and it all came out in one piece. So I looked down In the hole and the slot is not lined up center and it doesn't turn with the engine. Should I replace the pin or is the whole crank junk? Pulleys still turn on front of engine.
Thanks

Mike

I am trying to remember how a stock engine is set up. I think the oil pump drives the distributor. Need to figure why the oil pump is not turning. You may need to pull the oil pan or timing cover.
Edit.
The oil pump rums off of the crank. If it does not spin you have a broken key way on the crank or a broken pin on the oil pimp. Looks like you will need to pull the pan. Be sure to correctly instal the oil pump alignment as per the manual.

I found this

Here is a photo of what you will see with the oil pan off

Ok great, so I don't need to pull the head?

What gaskets should I order? I see a timing cover seal (no gasket) and I dont see an oil pan gasket on rock auto.

Thanks

I would make sure it's the pin in the driven gear of the oil pump first. Take a long flat blade screwdriver and try to turn the shaft, if it turns then you will need to pull the oil pan only

I think it's kind of flopping around in there. I tried to manipulate it a bit with a long screwdriver. Doesn't look to be held in place.

I see autozone has a timing cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Just want to make sure this project is doable. If I need a new engine I'd rather just get one rather than pulling all this apart and spilling oil everywhere.

I would start by pulling the oil pan then oil pump. If its a 2 wheel drive it can be done in under an hour.

It sounds as if the shaft on the oil pump is bad. If this is a 4X4 you will have to pull the motor to remove the oil pan. You should have to get a new pan gasket only, you do not have to pull the front cover unless the gear on the crank is bad.

Just fron a person that just did it on his 4X4

Ok I opened her up. Timing chain was broken and there was a piece of the casting that was loose. I was able to pick it off with my fingers. The block is cracked there. Next to where the distrb goes in. I guess I'll start looking for a new motor.

Autozone will sell me one for $1000. Should I go for it? Or just get a new truck? Mine's not in the best shape but it works.

Mike
