I think my last post may have been worded weird, or may have been confusing, but I was working on my truck last night, and again tonight, and i have failed to make any progress with this ignition. I have a 1980 chevy luv, lets just say, for the sake of simplicity, everything ignition-wise was stock (stock coil and distributor). I just recently replaced the engine with one from a 1981 chevy luv. this 1981 chevy luv has electronic ignition. I had all intentions of replacing the distributor of the 1981 chevy luv engine with the distributor from the 1980 chevy luv engine. For some odd reason, the distributor in the 1981 chevy luv engine is stuck in place, so my best option is to keep the electronic distributor. I have run into a problem with figuring out how to wire the electronic distributor with the original coil of the 1980 chevy luv. There is a pigtail of two wires coming from the electronic distributor. a reply from my last topic told me to hook one wire from the + side of the coil to one of those wires from the pigtail, and then hook another wire from the - side of the coil to the other wire from the pigtail. I have tried this (both ways of course) and there is still no spark. I pulled the main coil wire (the one running from the coil to the center of the distributor cap) and held it close to a grounded piece of metal on the block while trying to start the engine, in hopes of seeing a spark, but there was no spark. I replaced this coil with one from a 1979 chevy luv (same type of igntion with points etc.), and it is the same story. I would like to try the coil from the 1981 chevy luv (the coil originally being used with the electronic distributor that I am now trying to use), but I do not know how to hook up the coil from the 1981 chevy luv using the wiring in my 1980 chevy luv. There are currently three original wires going to the coil(four if you include the wire from the ballast resistor the the + side of the coil), these wires are; wire going to the first end of the ballast resistor, a wire going to the + side of the coil, and a wire going to the - side of the coil. How would I hook these wires up to the electronic coil from the 1981 chevy luv?

So recap; I have a 1980 chevy luv and I want to use an electronic distributor from a 1981 chevy luv. How can I make this work using : 1) the original coil, or 2) the coil from the 1981 chevy luv. If I must use the coil from the 1981 chevy luv, how do I wire it?

It looks like by far the easy thing is to get that distrubutor out and replace it with the 80. 81 has a completly different coil/ignitor assembly it uses with it's electronic distributor. If you use the 81 distributor you need its matching coil assy. From what I see on the diagram you would connect the black/yellow wire from your ignition resistor to the 81 coil +. Connect the black/red coil wire to the -. Looks like the two wire connector from the 81 distributor should plug into or connect to its coil somewhere. I have not done this before, it just looks from the diagram it would work.
As far as getting the old distributor out----as had been said plenty of penetrating oil around the shaft body. Try electronic freeze spray on the shaft body only--not the engine block--. Sometimes the rapid cooling/shrinking of the metal will help break it loose from its hole in the block. Do this while tristing turning the unit. Maybe rap a few times with a hammer, but not too hard. Good luck on your fix.

Did you check the fuses?

Thanks for the input, guys.
Egg, I am going out there in about 10 minutes to tinker with it some more. I'll see if the penetrating oil from last night helped any in releasing it. as far as the wiring, I might try to hook up the coil assembly from the 81.
And cleaver, I thought of this at work today, so i stopped by the store and picked up some fuses. I hope its a simple fix like this.
I will post later tonight with my findings.
Thanks again
