I am looking for a passengerside short shaft for an 1982, diesel, 4X4 LUV. With the hub locked in you can spin the tire without turning the axel and vice-versa. Two different garages have said it is the shaft causing this. Neither garage will pull the old shaft without one to put back in at the same time. I have checked all the parts houses and junkyard websites including RockAuto and can not find one. O'Reilly said they can send off my old one to be remanufactured for $59.00 however, I don't have the skills or equipment necessary to remove the old one. Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you need some help. Where are you located?

Jack

These are common replacement parts although they will have to be ordered, I can't believe you are having that much trouble. I would think your repair shop would be willing to order the part, then have you bring the truck in for repairs, that way they could add their markup to the new parts as well as charge for labor.
This is what I found: rockauto.com has what you need listed under both '82 Isuzu & LUV. Look under Drivetrain, it's called a CV axle assembly.
Autozone & O'Reilly both say you can order them, all have a core charge.
The garage doing the repair needs to tell you how much they are going to replace, the entire thing from the differential to the hub or just the outer portion from the soup can to the hub.

Have you read the service manual to do this? It is not really that hard.Only problem you should have is removing the nut for the cv shaft. And I think you could find an electric impact to use instead of a air one.

Hi Guys

Thanks Jack, I'm in Warrensburg, Missouri (16 hrs +/-), I'll leave the light on for you.

Lives, figures, Autozone and NAPA here told the repair shop they had a listing for the half shaft, but none of their suppliers carry the shaft anymore. I double checked and was told the same thing. Would the half shaft be considered the soupcan to the hub part? I'll check with Rockauto under CV axle assembly, what would you recommend, replace the whole shaft or just the soupcan (?) to the hub.

LUV masta, looking at the service manual is what convinced me to leave this to an expert. I counted 14 peices in the hub assembly alone, my best is 5 or 6. That and I have no garage and it's 20 degrees and snowing in my driveway. I don't have a compressor so I was looking at getting an electric impact wrench. My youngest son (Goodyear tire monkey), recommended I stay away from them. Have any of you guys ever used one?

Sorry Lives, tried to order the CV halfshaft (didn't show a CV axle assembly) online from Rockauto and Autozone via their websites, Rockauto only had the return and rebuild option available, Autozone's website said it was unavailable when I tried to checkout. Looks like I'll have to manup and pull it myself.

There's a couple in Memphis, MO (not TN), who dismantle LUV and P'up trucks. They go by "debsq" on eBay. I've bought parts from them, and have always been treated well. If you can't find them, let me know and I'll PM you their email address.

Generally, they would not be suitable for what he does at Goodyear. But for occasional use at home, they can be pretty handy. We had a P'up meet recently, and some members did a transmission upgrade as a project demo. They used an electric impact wrench to remove the flywheel bolts, so I can tell you they work.

I have a 12v electric impact, the kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter, and I love it. I keep it in the car for emergency tire changes. It's come in handy for getting stubborn bolts loose too. I wouldn't use it as a regular "go-to" tool, but it has its uses.

Has anyone taken the locking hub off to see what is broken? It might be a simple as a broken or missing hub snap ring, if the shaft splines are still good & the snap ring groove is still there you may not need a new shaft unless there is something else wrong. You did not say how the repair shops determined you needed a new CV shaft or how much or what part was bad. It makes a difference on how much you have to replace. It's even possible it's a bad hub, not the shaft at all.
The soupcan comes apart, it's held together with a big intrnal snap ring, if you take the shaft apart here you should be able to turn the knuckle sharp enough to pull the splined end out of the hub. If this will remove the bad part this is easier than removing the entire CV axle. If you've never done this there are several write-ups at planetisuzoo.com that will be very helpful. There seems to be a possible problem, some aftermarket soup cans are not quite the same size as OEM, so you have to make sure you reinstall exactly what you sent in for refurbishing.
To get the entire CV axle out without taking it apart requires dropping the entire front axle assembly, the CV shaft is held into the differential with a snap ring that can't be accessed except from the back of the bracket just inboard of the soupcan. There is a lot of labor involved with this route. However, since the entire new CV axle will come as a unit all the parts already mate.

Hi Lives
Two different shops told me it was the half shaft, I didn't get any details other than that. I'll call and see if they remember exactly what was wrong. Sat I'll try to pull the hub and see if I can tell what the problem is, it's supposed to be 40 degrees.

Thanks

Thanks Jack

I know who you are talking about, I bought all my front turn/marker light fixtures from them last year. Really gave me a good deal on the parts and everything worked great. I really need to make a pilgrimage to Memphis MO soon.
