Can you see fuel in the window on the carb when it dies?

Sounds like your accelerator pump is not working. Engine off, look down into the carb throat and move open the throttle linkage by hand---should see a squirt of fuel into the carb. If not remove the accelerator pump, and look into the pump well, make sure the check ball is in there. If you invert the carb with the top off during a rebuild the ball will fall out and get lost.
Happens some times.

My 76 LUV with an automatic did that too, I would have to warm it up really good and I think it was the choke that was causing all the problems. Does it happen only on cold starts or always?

It could be crap in the tank.It would get enough fuel at idle but die under load.I dropped my tank and cleaned it with muratic acid. Then you have to neutralize it with vinegar and water. I also use two fuel filters. One at the tank and one at the carb.

Take your fuel filter out and see if the fuel that comes out of it is clean or rusty/dirty.

My '76 Man. is doing the same darn thing right now...I have checked everything that you all have posted here and everything seems to be in working order, but still spits and spudders when taking off.

Come to think of it my 76 did this sometimes when it was warm too. I always blamed this on the POS Hitachi carburetor, my friend called it a "flat spot" or a "dead spot" where the carb can't get enough gas into the carb without flooding it out or something like that...

When mine did that with the Hitachi it was float level set too low. When I fixed that it got a lot better but not 100% fixed.
