as the title says my OIL light is coming on when im at idle, as soon as i hit 1200-1400 rpm it turns off but if i drop the throttle and the engine goes to idle it comes right back on.. i am pretty convinced the oil pump is not able to move enough oil to keep pressure up at idle but would like to hear from anyone who had the issue, bad sensor possibly?
oil pan is right at the level it should be.
last time i drove it to work and back when i got home i noticed a slight smell like a hot brake (metal-metal friction) so i have had it parked since... could have been my brakes but i dont want to chance ruining my engine

Roll in new bearings and put a new pump in. I had the oil light coming on when the 4cyl was in my luv. lol years ago. haha My bearings were shot. but if you open it up you might as well put a new pump on there for that much work. Can you even get the pan off without pulling the motor? I cant remember what mine looked like after all this time. lol

I was able to get the pan off of my '78 2wd. Just had to remove the front cross member. ( The bolt on one between the wheels).

dont think i can pull it with the diff and axle in the way would have to pull the motor im REALLY hoping its just the sensor, a new pump is only $30 but will take a little while to get into the motor to replace it.
dang and i just had the head rebuilt a few thousand miles ago i really hope i dont need to do another rebuild of the bottom end! i have another project car coming soon

Are you by chance running a Fram oil filter? If so, try ditching that first...

Oil light should come on at 5-7 lbs or less. Make sure you are using the proper oil weight--10-30 or 10-40. 5-30 will give you low pressure if the engine has too much wear. I would just replace the sensor, either that or screw in a gauge and check the pressure. Less trouble to just try a new sensor though.

I've had an oil light on at idle in more than one LUV. Its nerve-racking, but in both cases I solved it with thicker oil.
Something like 20w 40. I think since then I've gone back to 10w 30 and the issue has not returned.
Anyway, it doesn't always mean a rebuild is in order.

I ran my '78 for 3 or 4 years with a wrist pin knocking. Finally pulled it out for a rebuild when it started getting louder and louder.

glad it was just a sensor... was not looking forward to pulling the engine out to change the pump
