Hi All, Great Site!
I am new to the forum and am in need of some advice...my Grandfather has a 1982 Chevy LUV pick-up with the 2.2L Diesel engine and 4WD with the 4 spd manual transmission. Recently, the right front caliper froze, which resulted in metal-to-metal contact between the worn pads and brake rotor, so the rotor, caliper, and pads need to be replaced.
I've surfed online for replacement parts, and have done some reading on this website. It looks like I can get everything from RockAuto.com...I was planning to do both LH and RH calipers, and pads all around...thinking about doing both rotors as well.
What do you all recommend? The truck is lightly used - less than 50,000 miles on it in the last 30 years! It's basically used for putzing around in Northern Michigan during the summer time. I have seen some threads suggesting a change to the vented Isuzu Trooper set-up...but where can I find specifics? Should I just stick with the stock set-up?
Also, I'm a real newbie when it comes to working on these older trucks, espeically with the manual locking hubs on this 4WD set-up. I have done brake jobs on a couple more recent cars and trucks, and have packed wheel bearings for trailers as well, but does anyone have pictures of how everything comes apart/goes back together? Specifically, I have the caliper off, and assume I need to unbolt the center larger hub to rotor bolts, but then it also appears I need to take off the bolts around the locking mechanism as well? Any surprises I should be aware of when I do this? Do I need a hub puller? Any parts I need to replace, in addition to rotors, pads, and calipers?
Any advice on where to get the parts other than RockAuto.com is much appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for your help! Tom
