I swapped in a 1981 1.8 with 200k miles and good compression into my 79. My old truck had bad compression, burnt valve or something and when it was running decently, I felt it was getting better mileage. I have the weber kit from my old truck and two spare webers. I thought I would get better mileage with the Hitachi. Should I put the weber on? Is something else way off? This motor feels more powerful than my last one but the mileage sucks.

Well, first run a compression test again with a warm engine and without the plugs in. The Hitachi could be 'worn out' too. Have you tried a regular tune-up?-----Where you balance the vacumn on the vacumn gauge with the RPM to get the 'lean best idle' ? You go back and forth by adjusting the air/fuel screw with the idle rpm until you can do no better and this becomes the 'lean best idle'. You're looking for the highest vacumn and the least air/fuel mix at the same time. Keep the idle at around 900rpm. Don't go too lean though [by screwing in the screw] cause you could burn a valve.

I did swap a weber on to it. I believe it is running better now. Where can I attach a vacuum gauge? I do have one. There are several places on the intake manifold.

Thanks,

Mike
