Hi guys....yesterday I was giving my '77 stock LUV a going over and discovered oil in the radiator water. I quickly checked the dip stick and there was no 'milk shake' in there. I tried to flush the radiator and did pretty good 'till the thermostat opened then a bunch of oil came out with the flushing water and drained to the ground. So....I bit the bullet and pulled the head figuring there was a head gasket problem . Finally got to the gasket and looked it over pretty good. I figured the problem would be a bad spot in the gasket at the oil line that goes up to the cam. Well, the gasket didn't look real bad but I didn't see any real 'tears or nicks' in the gasket at the oil galley area either. The gasket was real clean[good shape] around all the piston holes and there was no drain down along the cylinder walls. The head was reconditioned about 3 years ago when I rebuilt the 1.8 engine. Haven't had any problems 'till ....yesterday. Aside from maybe a cracked head/block, can anyone come up with any other location where this could occur?? I got the head back on today and after scraping and cleaning both head and block, I couldn't see any cracks in the surface faces of either. Remember that the oil is only in the radiator water. I haven't finished up the re-assembly yet but probably will tomorrow. I do remember seeing a couple of drops of nice green anti-freeze right there at the cam oil galley. I notice that this area on the gasket is pretty far from the cylinders [2&3] but there is a couple of water jackets much closer. So, I guess, after all this BS, does anyone know another way that oil can get into the radiator?? Thanks for your time....Don

Not familiar with your truck. Is it an automatic? I have seen the tranny coolers in the rad leak and make the milk shake as well...

Won't be easy to find that one. The most likely would be a crack in the block or the head at the place where it comes up to the head. About the only place where the oil and water are in close proximitry under pressure. Oil is at 50 lbs and the water at 15 lbs so it could push into the water jacket somewhere. Maybe putting air pressure into the head oil port would come up with something. It's a crap shoot at this point, could be the head or block.
I guess at this point I would check the head out thoroughly first eliminating that, then assume it is in the block.
