So here is a subject that came up recently on another board. Older motors whether you are running the stock Isuzu or an older V8, are mostly flat tapper cam motors. High friction. New motors are almost exclusively roller tappet. Here's the problem falling Zinc, ZDDP levels in motor oils which protect cam are killing older motors!
LET THE PARTY BEGIN!

Until recently diesel-rated oils had a higher zinc content, so using these oils in a gas engine helped. The latest formula low emission diesel oils cut back on the zinc, though.
And it's not just auto engines, think of all the small equipment engines that are going to fail quicker. Couple the lubrication problem with the fuel problems caused by ethanol that these engines were never designed to burn and it is obvious that we are being regulated into buying newer equipment. Buying new things helps the economy, so that's a good thing, right?

At the risk of instigating yet another oil war here are my conclusions based on my own research and the fact that my Wife is a Certified Lubrication Specialist who input her experience.
Fact #1
Are you smarter than an Oil Engineer? The answer is NO YOU ARE NOT!
Oil Manufacturers have forgotten more than you will ever know AND have nearly unlimited research resources so you will never mix a better product in your garage than they sell. Problem is, they are NOT making a product for older engines. The next thing is, when you start adding things(ZDDP, PTTF) how are these going to interact with the additive package already in your oil?
Fact #2
Oils are better, cleaner, longer lasting than ever before!
Problem is, these older motors CONTAMINATE oil faster than they break it down. So for us guys dirty oil from PCV, blowby, fuel seepage is still a big problem.
Oils are lighter now, we have actually gone 200mph on a ZERO WEIGHT oil in the Wife's bike! Older motors NEED the heavier oils.
Fact#3
Who the hell put grain alcohol in my gas?
This crap is poison to your older car! It's Hygroscopic(attracts water) so it's pulling water into your fueling system is your motor. It also eats buna rubber for a snack. So there goes your fuel pump carb etc.

My conclusions:
Valvoline VR1 highest current available ZDDP content but a little pricey. On the other hand you are getting a PROFESSIONALLY built additive package.
Next best, an additive such as mentioned above. Either option coupled with frequent oil changes is a better option than regular oil. Avoid ethanol added fuel if possible.
Oh, did I mention leaded additives for fuel,,,, well that's another story.

Definitely a good sticky I think, as many will be doing more harm than good to their older motors by using modern oils if they don't have this info available. I for one am going to ask the local oil change quickie lube to carry one of these for me.

I am not worried at all. So my older engine wears out, just rebuild it and start again. Lets see the facts on how many miles it takes to wear outthe older engines, I think there are much better things to worry about.

I don't use oil additives in my '05 but I do in my Luv's and my sons 86 Blazer. If you can still find STP in the red bottle buy it...all you can because it has Zinc in it. (The blue doesn't) Risolone is also making a new additive with ZDDP. I don't use any other additives. Valvoline is good enough for me.

With what I am doing with my truck if the motor last 10k I am happy. Take a 350 turn it into a 383 with 600 plus horses and it is for drag racing only. it looks fast and drives faster lol. I use royal purple in mine.

i have original 1.8 in my luv and i only run royal purple with a lucas oil additive seems to keep her running ok for now and if she's goes out it's time to rebuild.
if you realy want to run older oils you can try and find old school military oil great for old tired engines

I've been using Rotella for the last several years in my engine with no problems. It has a high zinc content and its cheap at walmart.
