Basically you pull the filler plug (located on the right/pass side of the trans) and see if lube comes out. There is no dipstick. I recommend picking up a six point socket the right size for the filler plug. Seems like everybody rounds off the bolt trying to get it with a crescent wrench, one of mine I had to file the bolt head square to get it out of there. I don't recall the size off the top of my head, but see if I can find it. The right socket will keep from rounding the bolt head and make the job a lot easier.
My usual check/fill technique goes something like this:
Remove filler plug, often by banging knuckles on something when the wrench slips.
If full, face should be directly under the plug when removed, yummy.
If not full, try not to get finger stuck in hole checking to see how far down it is.
Get the hand pump and a quart of oil and start pumping it in the hole, dropping the tube at least once.
Fill until it runs out, down your arm, stains your shirt, and forms a small puddle on the ground.
Replace the fill plug. (Bang knuckles here if plug was removed without injury)
Roll side of face and hair through oil puddle on the ground getting out from under the truck.
