I am new to this site and am glad I found a group of luv lovers that I can share/learn new things from.I am going to purchase a 1980 Luv and was just curious as to what I should be looking out for that could cause future problems? The truck has 69,000 original miles on it...........1 owner/little old man. I have test driven it and all seems to be fine besides the oil leak out of the top of the oil cap and the clutch pedal needs to be tightened or a new clutch........the clutch pedal has to almost be let out completely before engaging. The truck is going to be used as a daily driver to work. What things should I start swapping out for new as I dont know what has has been changed or serviced and what is original.

like any car fuel filter etc.
then make sure you check out the dinky little fuse box and remove any corrosion from the contacts because it gets built up being as exposed as it is, its really common for them to cause problems.
then on down the line would be a weber carb... since the stock one is in all honesty a piece of crap.. lots of problems and its just not well designed..

if your looking for power parts you can try a offenhauser intake from Mokadeth on the forum with a weber carb.. a set of headers, electronic distributor and on from there.
and a distributor from an 85 isuzu pup would be great its electronic instead of the points system the stock one uses..

in my 80 4x4 i run am 85 p'up distributor, Weber 32/36 DGEV carb, yanked off all the emissions parts and sealed it all up... grabbing a 5 speed tranny.. got the efi intake from an impulse with turbo & manifold that will be going on over the winter
isuzu knew what they were doing when designing their engines a LOT of parts from later model 4 cylinder isuzus swap right over to our engines.. fuel injection manifold from trooper 2.6... turbo manifold and efi from older isuzu impulses
if your wondering about any thing to swap or convert to things like power steering, 5 speed, electronic ignition all the info is on the forum just hit "search"

Has the truck been run recently? Mine hadn't been run for a year when I bought. I had to change the brake cyincers in the drums, and new calipers in the front. Other than that, I'd start with fluid changes (oil, radiator, brake fluid). I also put two fuel fileters on my truck (one up by the carb). Though I partidaly did that because I came across a few places in my area with bad gas.

Welcome to the site! You will find newbies and some of us old guys that drove these trucks when they were new! But lots of great information to be had by all.
You have already recieved some great information but I would like to add one more suggestion. The clutch linkage was another weak point in these trucks especially up under the dash, linkage bends, breaks, streches, etc. So it is a good idea to learn now to remove the center dash unit, You can then get to the wiring inside and especially the clutch linkage back there. The center dash unit, i.e. speedo and guages, is held in with wing nuts, no screws, so you can reach up under each side of it, find the wing nuts with your fingers, there should be four of them, unscrew these and the center will come right out, then all you have to do is unclip the speedo cable, again with your fingers, and unplug the multi plug on the drivers side of the cluster and the dash is out!!! You can see the complete clutch linkage and repair it very easy this way.
Like you have been told, almost every question will be answered by someone on this site.
Good luck, dusty

So the clutch cable/linkage could be the problem....not necessarily that it needs a whole new clutch?
