i have an '80 4wd luv that wont idle. whenever its first cranked it runs fine, throttles up and down smoothly but after a short time it wont idle smoothly unless the choke flap is nearly closed. it you throttle up and quickly in short bursts it stays up but when you let off or try to throttle up smoothly it dies. please post on this ive wasted enough time NOT driving this truck. goin to pick up condenser and points for my distributor today

i had a similar problem lately and it was the float in my carb. It sprang a little leak and the engine was flooding with excess fuel. Do you get the smell of gas when it stumbles and dies? More infomration will help people try and troubleshoot this issue

+1 on carb float. Check it. Then use a vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture.

went and worked on it the other day. I scraped off the original points and reset the gap. that helped a good deal. I believe i may be getting a connection problem on several levels. ex. fuel pump-sometimes i get plenty of volume and pressure. sometimes i get very little. when i cleaned the points i took it through a few hills and trails and it did fine. the next day it sputtered some on the hills. not sure what the problem is there.

Gotta love the search for this forum. I had the same problem. Truck would drive great, but wouldn't idle. Spent about 2 hours trying to adjust the float on this hitachi. Finally got the float level just below half glass, and it idles fine.

Just my .02 cents but it also sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Do you still have your egr connected? I had the same issue not that long ago. Turns out that the carb was only mounted with 3 nuts installed and even these were not torqued down enough. They were finger tightened enough to mount the carb.

I would suggest a complete tune up with timing adjustment so as to eliminate any other possible issues. The nice thing about the hitachi is that you can take off the float bowl cover and adjust it quite rapidly.
